The Cheshire cat costume took about one week to make. I got the idea from another cat costume which I found while searching for an Alice in Wonderland costume! I started by sewing strips of pink and purple fuzzy material together. Then I cut a small adult animal body pattern out of the striped material and sewed it together according to the directions. I then cut out and sewed on a tail to the rear of the costume using a clear fishing line to attach the other end of the tail to the hand of the cat so it would sway back and forth. The body of the cat took only two days. The remainder of the week was left to work on the head. I made the head of the cat using a baseball cap as a starting point. Cutting fabric and attaching it in a way that I thought would make it look like the Cheshire cat, stuffing it to get the right size. As a final detail extra large goggle eyes were attached to give it the Mad Cat stare. Total Spent: $60 |

Every year my sister and I come up with a theme for Halloween costumes. This year we thought of Alice in Wonderland. I am the Queen of Hearts, my husband is the March Hare, my son the white rabbit, my sister the Card, her husband the Mad Hatter and her daughter Alice.
I love to sew and I made up the pattern for the Queen of Hearts outfit. I took about three patterns and put them together to make one. The wig was an Asian wig and the crown was a foam little bear crown that I spray painted gold. I also made the rabbit head for the March Hare by just a basic rabbit pattern but I had sewn in some wig hair for the center. The vest and bowtie I made of felt but rest of the outfit I found at a thrift store.
For the white rabbit I made the rabbit head also out of a typical rabbit pattern. The outfit I too had to make up a pattern because there are never any patterns for a suit coat and vest for a nine month old. I got a wooden circle, painted it white, stuck number stickers and wood strips for the "hands" and attached a gold chain from the hardware store.
For Alice my sister just followed the Alice in Wonderland pattern. The card she made out of felt. For Mad Hatter she found a green hat on the internet and we made the white press tag from my embroidery machine. The vest and bowtie was also made of felt and the jacket and pants from a thrift store.

For twin boys (age 3), you need a costume that they will WANT to wear and will be comfortable in for the night of Trick or Treating. I thought sweatshirt and pants would be perfect for this costume. Adding some "accessories" turned these basic clothes into an easy and cheap Alice in Wonderland costume.
Introducing - Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum. A gold/yellow sweatshirt, red sweatpants was the basis of this costume. I purchased some white felt to cut and make a collar around their neck. I tacked it down on both sides and added a small piece of Velcro around the back to hold in place.
A "peacock blue" color piece of felt was turned into a bowtie tacked onto the white felt collar. Blue fabric paint was used to write out "Tweedle Dee" and "Tweedle Dum" on the collar.
I purchased a red baseball cap (adjustable Velcro back). I attached a yellow pipe cleaner (which I cut in half to use on both hats) with a piece of yellow felt cut into a flag by wrapping it around the "button" on top of the cap. Dark shoes were worn to complete the costume.
This costume could cost you pennies if you already had the sweats outfit. The hat was $2; pieces of felt and pipe cleaner totaled $2. In total, I think I spent around $10, which includes purchasing the sweats.
Time spent making this Alice in Wonderland costume was only about 30-45 minutes. They were so comfortable that they didn't even realize they were wearing a costume. Best of all, they can wear the sweats afterward.
Total Spent: $10
