Homemade Samara Halloween Costume

I went to college without a firm idea on what I was gonna be that year. I had an idea a few months ago, but I couldn't remember it, so I figured if I couldn't remember it by October, that I would make a Homemade Samara Halloween Costume from "The Ring". "The Ring" is one of my favorite movies, and when I floated the idea to my dad, he loved it.

I bought an oversized white t-shirt, which I washed, then stretched out to make it longer. I had planned on using baby powder to make myself pale (which, by the way, didn't work, so don't try it; I really should've used makeup), and didn't wash my hair to make it look like I had just climbed out of a well.

There was no costume contest, so instead, after the one class I had, I stood by the security desk at the res hall and stared at people through my hair as they walked through the front doors. Everyone did a double take and went, "Whoa, what the heck is that?!" That's always fun; I love freaking people out.

Homemade Samara from The Ring Costume

Homemade Samara from The Ring Costume

This was the homemade Samara from The Ring costume that I made for my daughter.

The dress was hand-sewn, soaked in bleach, and then dyed tan with RIT; after that, it was soaked in a cooking pot and then hang dried, to give it that "dead material" look. Because the dress was made with thin weave-like material, it was not very warm, so my daughter wore a long-sleeved black shirt underneath. The wig was cheap and super long; I picked a long wig because of the wavy look, cut the length and put hair gel on it to give it a wet look.

I took white and black cream face makeup and mixed them together to create different shades of grey. A darker shade with lots of black was put around the eyes and the lips were also painted black to create a scary feel to the costume. I also put the grey on the hands and darkened the fingers. The fingernails were painted black.

She wore simple white tights, small white socks and black shoes, as little girls would.

Homemade Samara Morgan Costume

Needed a costume for a film character costume party, but as a short, black woman, I didn't want to go as something too predictable. I purchased a size 18 top from a charity shop and soaked it in a bucket of hot water overnight with added tea bags to create the aged effect. I rubbed in small handfuls of mud and dirt and spilled coffee to create staining.

Shoes bought at kids shoe shop for a fiver. I brought long white socks and gloves from the joke shop and smudged more dirt in them. I stuck on false nails to the gloves and painted them with black nail varnish and topped it off with a wig brushed forward.

My homemade Samara Morgan costume caused plenty of frights in the ladies toilets!!!
