These are our cool homemade Monsters Inc. family costumes. I dressed as Mike, my husband was Mike and our little girl was Boo.
For Mike's costume, I used 9 layers of paper mache over an exercise ball. Be careful not to cover the plug so that you can deflate it and save it for another occasion. I then painted it with Mike's features. I used an ordinary construction hat that I painted to resemble the hats in the movie.
For my husband's costume, I used about 3 yards of furry fabric. I dyed it three times because it was acrylic, a material that does not absorb dye very well. The spots were fabric paint which comes in an aerosol can. I put a headband on the inside of his hood to keep the horns erect. I also put a metal hanger in the tail (which you can't see here) to keep it raised instead of flopping down.
Boo's costume was purple fleece lined with grey fleece. I used a mop head for the hair and the eye balls were Styrofoam balls, attached to pipe cleaners and then covered with black electrical tape.
We got so many compliments on Halloween.

I made this Homemade Monsters Inc. Family Costume to be different from other people since every kid loves Sully. I figured hey why not buy a sewing machine and try it out! Lol, well needless to say I succeeded and everyone wanted pictures with us especially Sully! Sully is made out of faux fur and I sewing in a pillow stuffed belly to make him nice & heavy! & I am celia, Mike's Girlfriend :) Which took a lot of work because she was very time consuming with A LOT of detail cutting each piece indivually and getting it on that dress so it could flap perfectly!
I absolutely love these costumes! Mike was bought online, because God only knows I would of been embarrassed to let my son walk around looking like a bootlegg Mike but after I made those costumes next time I know to save my money and go for it!

For Mike, I used paper mache to make the body and green fleece to make the shoe covers. I cut a Styrofoam ball in half and glued that to the front of the body about half way through the paper mache process. I then painted the costume with acrylic paint.
I Used wire from inside a play tunnel to make the body of Boo and covered it with purple felt. Added clothes hanger and styrofoam balls to make the eyes and a mop painted grey for the hair.
Celia was a dress pattern I modified and made legs out of purple leggings stuffed and added a coat hanger to make them curl on the bottom. Painted rubber snakes for head.
Sully was a modified dragon pattern that I made using fleece and I added purple spots with fusible webbing.

This year our family decided to go as Monsters Inc. All homemade Monsters Inc group costumes were handmade and quite inexpensive! except the Sully material that cost us $45.
The Mike Wazoski was made from a giant balloon and then paper mache`d all our eyes we used white one way stickers to see out! Except for the material most parts were bought at our local dollar store. We went through about 50 glue sticks (the big ones!). All in all it was as much fun to make as to where them!
