I fitted and painted the jacket and added frayed cording around the lapels and fancy trim around the cuff. All the buttons are mismatched. I added dragonfly applique and silver pendants on left breast of jacket. Tied ribbons to extra large safety pin an pinned by left pocket and pleated and sewed on purple satin right pocket.

The spools are attached in a strip with heavy gauge beading wire to heavy link chain on each side of the spool. I attached the spool strip to another chain that ran over the shoulder, across the back and down by the pocket with grommets and cotter pins.

The hat is made of cardboard with black and lace fabric stretch over it and painted black and gold. The brim is made from heavy gauge wire with the same fabrics stretched over it then attached to the top. I made the hat pins with gold jewelry wire and beads and buttons. I sewed peach satin fabric band then frayed the ends and applied daisy appliques to the two hanging peices in back. I glued a piece of striped fabric on the hat, then tucked gold lace fabric and the 10/6 hat tag behind the band.

I made the bow in pieces then sewed them together. I attached it to a band that goes around the neck and attaches together with Velcro in the back.

I took gloves and cut off the fingers, then sewed tan plaid fabric around them and added lace to the the glove wrist band that lays over the plaid.

Lastly we put in the contacts and did the makeup.
We had a great time making the Homemade Crazy Eye Mad Hatter Halloween Costume and he had a great time getting the attention when in costume.

Coolest Homemade Tim Burton's Mad Hatter Costume 26

Homemade Tim Burton's Mad Hatter Costume

Homemade Tim Burton's Mad Hatter Costume

I started creating my Tim Burton's mad hatter costume in October 2009 to take on my trip to Disney World.

I spent over 40 hours on the hat alone. I used 3 soldering irons to burn the hole pattern in the hat. I then used gold, brown & copper paints as accents and made patterns in gold thread throughout the hat. I then sewed all 4 parts of the hat together. I made the hat scarf and hand painted the flower design on it. I purchased 4 hat pins from eBay and hand made the embroidered peacock feather.

The vest was another challenge. I had a friend cut the front panels of vest in black and drew a grid with fabric pencil. I used an exacto knife to cut out every second square and sewed black & white hounds tooth material sewing up every line. The shirt I bought and dyed pink adding the frill to the cuffs.

The pants and jacket were custom made and have all the trimmings including the embroidery on the pant leg as well as the bird patch (from eBay), a dragonfly patch on the coat and the fur lining on the seams with a purple lining. I made a pincushion ring and placed a pin with a yellow head in it as well as making a blue & red thimble. The gloves were hand sewn and shoes were painted brown.

I made this Johnny Depp Mad Hatter Costume myself for Halloween. I bought a normal plain black hat from a costume shop. I made all the accessories from assorted items form hobby lobby. Then used my girlfriend's old jacket which I cut off the collar and added some fabric from hobby lobby.

I made the spool chain by looping braided wire thru the spool holes and an old metal chain hot glued to the spools. The pants were purchased from a thrift store and cutoff and hemmed. Extensions were glued into my hair and colored hairspray used. I used old socks for gloves and cutup T-shirt with white medical tape to make the fingers. The bow tie was made from a regular tie I found at a thrift store along with a thrift store prom shirt with some lace sewn on the sleeves.

This is a really good Mad Hatter. I was the white queen from the new Alice in Wonderland and had tons of Mad Hatters asking to get pictures with me, but yours is definitely the best.
