Our Japanese exchange student wanted to be the "Mad Hatter" ala Johnny Depp. We started out at the thrift store. We found a black dinner jacket, a vest, a pink shirt, pinstriped pants, and a cool floral skirt to cut up for the bowtie. We also found a plaid knit men's shirt to cut up for the gloves.

I noticed that the Johnny Depp Mad Hatter coat appeared to made of Taffata. To create that dimensional effect, I taped off the coat in diamonds with scotch tape. I then painted the jacket with bronze and copper paint mixed with textile medium. I added a ribbon trim at the cuffs and the gold buttons. The gloves took me the longest time. I cut them out from the plaid shirt, it was a knit. It took me 3 tries, without a pattern, to get them right. I trimmed the gloves with lace.

We hemmed the pinstriped pants and altered the vest. The pink shirt was perfect. The "spool" accessory is trimming for a Christmas tree. The wig, hat and socks are purchased.

My exchange student was thrilled with his Mad Hatter DIY Costume.

Every year the Hospital I work at has a Halloween Costume Contest. So this year 2009 we decided to do Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, even though the movie hadn't came out yet. So by looking at the pictures on the internet we assigned each character to each person that worked in the Lab.

So we have The Mad Hatter, Alice, Tweedle Dee & Dum, the Rabbit, the Cheshire Cat, & the Queen of Hearts. Needless to say we won. Each homemade Alice in Wonderland costume was made by hand including the cat's head. It was made from using fiberglass & cheesecloth, painted on an inflatable ball, once dried I deflated the ball and had a round head. I then took a hard hat (so it would sit on top of my head) & glued it on the head, painted xmas ornaments for the eyes, bought fake fur glued around the head, and then spray painted the fur to give it the touches of the cat. ENJOY!

This is an awesome handmade Mad Hatter costume!!! When I make a costume for my kids, I try to get it as close to the real thing as possible! Every part of the costume I made by hand except the hat, I got it from Busch Gardens, and then I covered it entirely with lace and painted it black, green and gold to match the real thing. I added the material to the hat along with the knitting needles I made. I didn't make the wig, shoes or socks.

I made the coat out of brown suede material and painted it black, to give it the "burnt" look. I hand made the vest, shirt, scarf, the spool of thread sash and pants, which have embroidery on one leg! This handmade Mad Hatter costume was time consuming, and the make-up tops it all off!

I love to make these difficult costumes because on the day of Halloween, it makes my kids feel really special! Hope you've enjoyed this costume!
