For this DIY "The Man With the Yellow Hat" from Curious George Halloween costume, I got a pattern for a race car jumpsuit and made it with yellow fleece. The tie is also made from fleece, fastens with velcro, and the spots are made with a Sharpie marker. The belt was one my son already had.

The 'boots' are 2 pieces. The tops of the boots aren't fastened to the pants, and the shoe covers aren't fastened to the boot tops. This makes it easier to get on, and as they're not fastened to the jumpsuit it can be used for something else. Fleece sticks to itself really well so it's not a problem that it's not attached.

The hat was a foam cowboy hat. I made a cone hat out of the yellow fleece and stuffed it. I then slid it over the hat and hand sewed it to the hat. Then I covered the hat brim with the yellow fleece and machine sewed it. The chin strap is attached with velcro on both sides so it's really easy to get off. The hat band is sewed together at the back but is not attached to the hat. It stays put so I didn't figure it was worth the extra effort. I did make a brown fleece belt but decided to use the leather one instead.

I even found a metal pail that has Curious George painted on it. Inside was a stuffed 'jumpy squirrel.' Of course, The Man must have his monkey by his side, so 'little brother' played that part!

Homemade Curious George and The Man in the Yellow Hat Costumes

Curious George (in the monkey costume started two years ago from a pattern my mom made for my oldest son) and the Man in the Yellow Hat were my sons' Homemade Curious George and The Man in the Yellow Hat Costumes this year.

For Curious George, we took the red vest off the original costume and added the Fireman hat, since he is always wearing various uniforms while he’s getting into trouble!

For The Man in The Yellow Hat, we found white pants and a shirt and dyed them yellow. The hat was tough; we originally tried to repurpose a witch’s hat but ended up constructing it from posterboard. We cut one circle for the brim, and a quarter circle for the top, folding it over to create the square top. We then covered it with yellow felt, and added the brown felt hatband.

He wore brown shoes, and we made felt “boot tops” that attached with Velcro to make it look like he had tall boots on. We found the messenger bag at a thrift store and added a black belt. The tie is felt with an elastic band, and we drew the black dots on with magic marker.

Homemade Curious George's Man with the Yellow Hat Costume

This is my son William dressed up as the Man with the Yellow Hat for World Book Day November 2007. He won first prize! The Curious George's Man with the Yellow Hat Costume was very easy and didn't cost more than about 10 dollars.

The hat is actually a black witches' Halloween costume hat covered in yellow felt with the top pushed in. The shirt and tie are from a charity shop. The socks are my husband's. The shorts and shoes are part my son's school uniform.

The monkey we had and I just stitched one hand to an opposing foot so it would 'hang on'.
