My son doesn't have many influences in his life, so when I asked him what he wanted to be for Halloween this year, I am sure that his mind had few options. He said he wanted to be Buzz Lightyear and the first thing I thought of was "great.. armor. I can't do armor". The last time I tried to do armor was when I was a teenager and made my little brothers both transformers using boxes and colored paper.

So after researching the costume a little bit, I decided I wanted to do a lot of soft/lightweight materials. Stuff that he could walk around easy in, not block his vision and still be recognizable as Buzz. I looked at what was out there and quite frankly wasn't satisfied with what I saw for a two year old.

This homemade Buzz Lightyear child costume is made from white fabric turtle neck and pants, that have colored fun foam applications. We then got some one inch upholstery pipping from Joanne's. My wife then made "pockets" for the pipping in black t-shirt yardage and shoved the pipping into it to make the accordion style waist that Buzz has.

The buttons on his chest plate are modified emery boards and a Snapple cap button. The decals and logos were all tweaked in Photoshop and made into stickers or iron on applications.

The jet pack was a labor of love/hate and literally took me weeks to do. It?s base is made from blue camping foam that has been layered and layered with glue and caulking. Then it was spray painted to match.

The buzz gauntlets are modified plastic cups.
The boots are spray painted rain boots.

Details on how we made every aspect can be found here...

My two year old son wanted to be Buzz Lightyear for Halloween and I wanted to dress to match him. I looked at Jessie costumes, but I didn't like them. I've never been a fan of store bought costumes either. So then I thought, why not be Buzz too?

For this Homemade Buzz Lightyear Halloween Costume Idea, I used white clothes for the part underneath. I wore the costume to a few parties and to work, so I had white sweat pants and a long sleeved shirt for that. I added green trim to my boots and gloves. I bought the wings from a party store, and I used a green sports bra for the chest plate part. I made all the buttons with foam sheets from Hobby Lobby. I cut out two of everything, sewed on the bottom without the designs or words on them, then hot glued the second piece to the ones sewed on. That way, I could just cut them off after Halloween and still wear the sports bra. My friend was Woody (the girl version, not Jessie) to match me.

Homemade Buzz Lightyear Costume

This is me and my cousin in our Halloween costumes we made. We decided on going as Woody and Buzz this Halloween since Toy Story 3 will be out by then, but we couldn't wait to make the suits so we made them last weekend.

The homemade Buzz Lightyear costume suit is made of camping mats and painted with a mixture of bathroom sealing silicone and pva paint (this made the suit strong and flexible).

The Woody suit was made with stuff we had laying around the house but we used the spare bits of camping mat and paint to make the sheriff badge and belt buckle. The Buzz and Woody homemade costumes look and feel really good to wear and I can't wait for Halloween to come.
