Cool DIY Costume Idea: My Bright Daughter – The Chandelier!

My daughter, Bridget, 7 years old and in 2nd grade, had the idea of being a chandelier for Halloween. She was sitting in the living room and staring at the light in our dining room. When it started to register that I would have to figure out how to make this dream a reality, she explained that she had lots of silver beads and we could get Christmas lights to make it really light up. Trips to Walmart, Kmart, Target, etc. ensued until we found battery operated lights early in the season. Then large candles were found that were also battery operated for the bottom of the costume. The big question was how to make the shape of the costume. I thought a hoop bottom slip would hold the shape. Until I realized how expensive and hard to get they were. Trips to bridal shops put a kabosh on that. I also hated to rip off the cloth to simply keep the frame on something I had just bought. Then I was in a garden shop and saw the tomato plant wires that hold the plants up. We brought it home and used pliers to bend the bottom tier up and out, to hold the large candles at the base. TaaDaah! Finally it started looking like a chandelier. Bridget wore it on Halloween and as it got darker, it looked even better lit up. It did come in handy at the school Halloween party. Smaller children who were afraid to enter the Haunted House followed as Bridget and her costume lit the way. At school it was somewhat uncomfortable (especially when attempting to sit while taking a test on October 31st !) It took some work, but was definitely worth it and made a great Halloween memory for us both !!
