Alien Halloween Ideas for Costumes

I built a metal "jaw" onto a hockey helmet and them using a large foam block sculpted it down to shape. I attached it to the helmet with a metal rod sticking out of the back of the helmet and to the front with cable ties. I then covered it with lyres. I used corrugated plastic pipe as well. The body and tail are foam cut to shape and painted black. Spray glued onto a black cloth vest.

It was our first home made costume. We had so many Halloween ideas but decided on this Alien costume!

Alien Halloween Ideas for Costumes

I created this costume in 2006 for our company Costume Contest and took first prize! I collect all my Halloween ideas from other costumes that I see every year. I am not a seamstress (at all) but the whole costume is hand sewn, not neatly, but I managed not to make any of the stitching show. That was the need for the sleeves and the hood on the shroud.

I found an old hiking backpack with an aluminum frame and attached a piece of PVC pipe to establish the height of the alien head and secured it with duct tape. I then constructed the head from fabric and batting. I didn’t have to be neat in my stitching because of the hood which I sewed to the top of the head. I made the eyes of felt and a scrap of shiny fabric with a little padding to make them stick out slightly. On the top corners of the metal pack frame I placed old tennis balls to form bony shoulders and an old pillow folded over the pack to round the alien back. I attached the long skinny arms up the sleeves and taped them to the frame. I cut the back out of the footed pajamas so my arms would fit in and stuffed it from the waist down adding weight to the feet so they would bounce when carried. I put Velcro at the back of the neck of the pajamas so they would close around the backpack frame. I also used Velcro on the palms of the alien hands.

The bottom of the costume was black pants and alien feet which I sewed onto slippers. The shroud closed around my waist but was hidden by the pajamas. The trickiest part is the placement of the Velcro on the pajamas where you attach the alien hands to support the (stuffed) legs. This is what makes the effect appear real. Once that is done you are set. I spent about $100 putting this together because I brought new slippers to make the feet new pants hooded cape and footed pajamas. I could have cut it down by using more used items but time was short for me. I hope you enjoy the result and that you can also get Halloween ideas from this costume.

Alien Halloween Ideas for Costumes

We have very easy Halloween ideas. The alien head is made from a balloon covered with paper Mache. Eye holes were cut in the mask and plastic was cut from the rounded corners of a used milk jug. Eye holes were cut in the plastic and then plastic was covered with material from a pair of black sheer nylons allowing enough vision. These nylon covered rounded pieces of plastic were taped in each cut out eye hole on the mask.

The nose was drawn on with marker and the mouth was cut out with a sharp knife. Styrofoam blocks were then glued inside the mask to keep it from bobbling around and shifting too much and to allow maximum air flow to circulate.

The head was spray painted in gray and green shades and then spray painted again in green glow-in-the-dark paint to create a spookier effect. The pink silk nighty was purchased at a local thrift shop as was the tutu.

Since the tutu was made for a child we purchased a wedding veil and sewed excess material onto the width of the tutu. 2 pair of black nylons were worn over a pair of Crock type shoes to give the effect of alien feet and 2 pair of black sheer socks were worn over the arms to create alien hands.

The rainbow logos on the shoulders are Muffler Man air fresheners trimmed to fit and the patch on the chest was printed off the internet onto heavy duty card stock and sewn on the nighty. The majority of the cost involved was the 3 cans of spray paint as everything else was either from thrift shops or recycled from household materials. Our easy Halloween ideas took first place at a local costume contest!

Alien Halloween Ideas for Costumes

We searched for Halloween ideas on the Web and found this idea that the boys loved. We purchased large alien costumes at the costume store for about $18. It included the mask robe and gloves.

The alien's head was a balloon attached to a paper towel roll (neck) and connected to a foam board that acted as the shoulders of the alien. The foam board was strapped to the child's back like a backpack. Stuffed tights were taped to the foam board to act as arms. The legs were the challenge.

The child wore a belt with a leather tool holder. From the tool holder we fastened PVC pipes (a few pieces and elbows) that acted as the hips knees and legs. Another stuffed tight was placed over the PVC pipe to give the legs a realistic look.

The costume was a huge hit at school... the question they kept getting was "who is holding you?"

Good luck with your Halloween ideas.

Alien Halloween Ideas for Costumes

When I asked my son what he wanted to be for Halloween I was surprised he wanted to be an alien. But not just any alien. So I started hunting for Halloween ideas for an alien.

I took my boys shopping for all the materials. He picked out the materials and colors for his alien. Although he wanted to be a scary alien, the material he picked lent itself to a cute adorable alien (don't tell him I said that). The space creature had to be green with orange spots, have a hidden pocket (for stashing candy) and also his own space baby (with three eyes).   Alien Halloween Ideas for Costumes

I cannot sew but every year I embark on the task of making my boys costumes. I usually have them lie on the fabric and trace around them and then sew it up.

The alien fingers were the hardest on this costume. To keep the fingers straight I put wooden skewers in the tips and then stuffed with cotton balls.

Our Halloween ideas won us the best costume again this year at the Cub Scout party.

Alien Halloween Ideas for Costumes

I actually got some Halloween ideas from Family Fun magazine last year.

It was a balloon papier-mache head with a paper towel roll attached to the bottom then painted and eyes made of felt attached with glue. My son wore the pajama top with the pants stuffed with batting and attached with safety pins and slippers.

On the bottom he wore a straight black skirt. I then took a piece of cardboard approx. the same size as his back (a little taller) and attached the head, cut slits for ribbon to go through and tie around like a backpack onto his back, then covered the alien's head with a large black sheet to cover everything.

I have the exact directions if interested. I know it sounds hard but it was a very simple costume, just time consuming for the papier-mache head. I hope you find these Halloween ideas helpful!

Alien Halloween Ideas for Costumes

I made this costume for my eight-year-old son who wanted a costume that nobody else had. One of the Halloween ideas I remembered I had seen was an old picture of a gorilla holding his trainer costume. But I wanted something a little scarier. So I searched all over the Internet for different Halloween ideas and directions until I came up with this. It took all weekend to do but it was worth it. He loved it and so did everybody else!

Here are my Halloween ideas - you need:

Old baby bed with at least 20 vertical rails the same size (one you don't care to destroy), 5 or 6 yards of black fabric, silver spray paint, black and green craft paint, green medical gloves, 2 large pieces of cardboard, wood screws, 18 in. balloon, sandpaper, wrapping paper cylinder, hot glue gun and sticks, old pair of sweat pants, old pair of socks, newspaper, 2 cups boiling water, 2 cups cold water, 3 tablespoons sugar, hospital gown, toilet paper.

1. Take the side rail from baby bed remove vertical rails with jigsaw or hand saw. You will need 20 rails.

2. Sand all 20 rails and spray paint silver. Let dry at least 1 hour.

3. Blow up balloon as big as you want the alien head. Prepare papier-mache by combining 1/2-cup flour, 2 cups cold water, 2 cups boiling water and 3 tablespoons of sugar and allow it to cool and thicken.

4. Tear newspaper into strips and papier-mache one layer at a time to balloon let dry completely before applying next layer continue until you have 8 to 10 layers. Tape wrapping paper cylinder to bottom and papier-mache over it also connecting it.

5. Paint papier-mache balloon and cylinder with green paint and let dry when dry use black craft-paint to paint eyes.

6. Construct two squares from the painted rails with wood screws. You may have to pre-drill the holes before using the screws.

7. Connect the squares together at each corner making a cube.

8. Space out the remaining rails to make the bars of the cage; two on each side of the cube.

9. Trace the top and bottom of the cage onto the two large pieces of cardboard. Cut the cardboard to size. Spray the cardboard silver and screw to the top and bottom of cage.

10. Cut a hole in the bottom of the cage toward the rear big enough for child to slide in and out of.

11. Connect alien head and neck to back of cage with screws at the bottom of the neck. Make sure the head is above cage.

12. Take black material and cut two thick strips to later be used as the straps and set aside.

13. Put child in cage and mark where the child's shoulders are on the two middle bars of the back of the cage. Put a screw about 2 in. below that shoulder mark on the outside of both bars just screwing them in half way.

14. Take the two strips and tie them to the bottom rail below the shoulder marks. Now when finished you use these straps like the straps of a backpack going on the child shoulders and tied to the screws below the shoulder marks.

15. With the remaining fabric drape over the alien head and hot glue in place like a hood. Hot glue the sides together to hide the lower part of the neck.

16. Take green medical gloves and stuff with toilet paper. Hot glue the openings shut. Position the gloves on the side rails as if the alien was holding the cage and hot glue in place with fingers wrapped around rail.

17. Grab a piece of fabric from sides and pull up to gloves cut slit in fabric and place around gloves; hot glue in place.

18. Take the sweat pants and stuff loosely with newspaper. Stuff the socks tightly with toilet paper. Place the stuffed socks inside the feet of the sweat pants; hot glue in place.

19. Arrange pants in bottom of cage with waistline near the opening in the bottom (you can put them in any position you like but I found it was a lot easier and more realistic with legs crossed); hot glue in place.

20. When child is ready to get in just put the hospital gown on once inside and arrange so that the child's back or lap can't be seen. The child can wear either a long black skirt or a black pair of pants to hide their legs. Don't forget to cut any extra fabric that might be dragging the ground so that they don't trip.

I hope you found my Halloween ideas helpful!

Alien Halloween Ideas for Costumes

We love science fiction, and a friend of ours bought this funny headband for Kira for her birthday. I thought it would be funny to spray her hair pink and make her a purple outfit to match the antenna.

I got my inspiration from Star Trek of course. I went to Walmart, got some fabric and some flower wire and sewed her up a little costume. Everyone loved it! We hope you will love my Halloween ideas too!

Here are a few of my costume-making Halloween ideas. I started off with a 3/4" three foot long dowel and painted it black. I drilled two holes about 10" down to string wires through to hold the eyes which are two Styrofoam balls covered in black fleece or felt and black and green-colored foam with googly eyes glued on. Black pipe cleaners poke into the Styrofoam at eyelash angles.

A bit further down the dowel, I drilled holes for arms to hang on - made of dryer vent with black gloves wired on with green felt fingernails glued on. The center faux zebra fur is covering the attachment of these items on the dowel. I stitched it together on top and bottom.

I used a large piece of green fleece, wrapped it around the eyeballs and tied together underneath. I made a nose out of the same black/green fleece glued together and wired it around the tied fleece. There are small dowel rods wired onto the dryer vent at the gloves for wearer to move arms.

The wearer has on a backpack, which is also belted around his waist for extra support as well as his chest (otherwise it can be top heavy). Place the dowel down into the backpack (we had a matching green fleece jacket to cover up the backpack). I hope you find my Halloween ideas helpful!
