Homemade Edward Scissorhands Halloween Costume

This is a Homemade Edward Scissorhands Halloween Costume I made for my Ex when we lived in LA. I started with a zip up leather jacket that I got at the thrift store.

I turned the jacket around so it actually zipped up the back. I bought any and all leather belts from the thrift store and either they were already black or I spray painted them. I glued on little metal studs and loops where needed with a hot glue gun.

I cut parts of the jacket and re sewed them by hand for a more 'handmade' look. The belts were secured by hot glue and thread and the jacket slipped on backwards then all the belts were fastened. The neck part is actually ht collar turned up and fastened with thin belts.

For the pants just some simple leather pants taken in to be skin tight. He used his own black boots which I added studs and belts to.

This is his own hair which I pinned and teased and sprayed the heck out of with aqua net!

The hands are leather gloves with foam blade cutouts covered in duct tape (the first night for a party we used I think foil which came off)

I dressed as Lydia that year.

Homemade Edward Scissorhands Halloween Costume

Halloween is my favorite holiday! Every year I try my best to come up with a creative homemade costume. There is nothing better than the feeling that you did it yourself!

This year my inspiration came from my favorite movie "Edward Scissorhands". I thought I knew how I would bring his outfit together until I got to the hands!. To be Edward, I surprising wore everything I already owned, plus a few extra belts from Goodwill.

I started this Homemade Edward Scissorhands Halloween Costume with a black turtleneck, black shiny leggings and black combat boots. I gathered any studded belt that I would find. I wrapped one around my neck, a couple around my legs, three on my torso and another one weaved horizontally.

Now the challenging part: the Scissorhands. I cut out six pairs of scissors from foam board. I spray painted them silver and then painted the handles black. I then used electrical tape to attach them to black leather gloves. I placed them in between my fingers so I could still move and pick things up.

This costume was a big hit! My favorite ever! Hopefully this will give others the inspiration to be Edward. It was so much fun!

Coolest DIY Edward Scissorhands Halloween Costume 11

by Cara
(South Portland, Maine)

On November 1, 2009, my then 3 year-old son Sid announced to me that he wanted to be Edward Scissorhands for Halloween in 2010. I believed every word because he had done the same thing the year before as a 2 year-old - told me that he wanted to be Willy Wonka the following year, and actually followed through when the time came!

The process of building this DIY Edward Scissorhands Halloween costume was a major team effort - we all shopped for months at used stores collecting the belts and buckles needed to adorn the suit. I sewed and adorned the (p)leather suit and did his make-up, and my husband built the scissor hands and did his hair. And Sid, well he just rocked the costume, which I believe is the most important element of all.

Sid trick-or-treated in the full Edward suit, including pants, shirt and suspenders, but I just could not resist building him the entire suit, and I believe because of this, he truly became Edward. In his own words as he fell asleep on Halloween night: “This was the best day ever.”
