I had first suggested dressing as a Barbie Doll in a Box. But with my daughter Janelle now 8 1/2, in her eyes she has passed the Barbie stage and now prefers her Bratz Dolls. So now the plain pink box that was planned has now evolved into a theme styled Bratz Packaging.

So we found a Brats Cat Costume. I got some cardboard boxes from work, measured the card to my daughter's height and glued it all together with my glue gun and heavy duty glue sticks and reinforced inside with duct tape. We found some Bratz costume pictures on the internet and the Bratz Logo. Painted the box with Fall and Halloween colors. I painted the black shadow tree on the front and back along with the haunted house on the back.

The spiders on the front, the bats and ghosts on the back are 3D plastic rubber toys that were glued on. Painted the Bratz Logo on the front and back. Most Dolls come with accessories so we added a masquerade mask and false eyelashes. Put a Halloween banner across the front. BUT WHEN WE ADDED THE BARCODE ON THE BACK IT SEEMED TO PULL IT ALL TOGETHER. I added plastic pull ties through the back to secure a belt to attach the box to her and two more pull ties on each side as handles.

Finally I cut the front about 12 inches up from the bottom so when she walked or went up the stairs it allowed for some movement. It was a hit with the teachers, friends and the whole school. She wants to wear it again next year with a different style Bratz costume.

First off, I just want to say thank you to every one on the website, you guys are so amzing.

For this Homemade Barbie in a Box Costume get a wardrobe box from your local clothing store or home hardware. Then we cut a hole in the front of the box. We then got some pink, purple and red paint to paint the Barbie box. Now to make me able to hold the weight of the box we had to staple the back of a backpack on the box, what I mean by that is we cut of the hole front of the bag with all the zippers and openings and left the part with the straps and how you place the backpack is the same way you would wear it in school, the straps on your shoulders and the back is stapled to the box.

Then we went to dollarama and bought mini wallpaper to put on the inside of the box (optional) and you can also add a barcode or a tag to the box. And then I got a wig from Wal-mart and I just wore some sparkly clothes and then we were finished.

Well I have seen Barbie in a box costumes online before, but I wasn't pretentious enough to think I was a California or Princess Barbie (plus I look horrible as a blonde) so why not add some humor and be brunk B***ch Barbie!?!

Most versions I found online of a Homemade Barbie in a Box Costume were hand painted or spray painted the box, which I think made it TOO homemade looking. So I covered it in hot pink fabric and used really paper and plastic on the inside for a more real look. And since I'm a graphic design I designed the logo and everything for the front. I had a real plastic covering that Velcro opened and closed so I looked "shrink wrapped. I didn't have it "up " most of the time though because I got claustrophobic and couldn't talk to anyone, so I don't have a good picture of me "inside the plastic".

I also had 2 accessories. One is a martini glass and the other was a cell phone with a 'late night drunk text' to Ken. Haha.

Attaching the box
by: Anonymous

Hi how did u attach the box to ur self?

RE: to comment above...
by: Meredith

the box had straps (with "female" Velcro on the ends) on the inside that went through slots to the back outside, and stuck to the "male" Velcro strips on back. They slipped on my arms like a back pack and I just needed a friend to tighten and Velcro them once I was in it. And to undo them when I needed to get out.

Before you cut the slots, go higher than you think! The box sinks once on your shoulder so you need the straps to be pretty high.

It wasn't the most convenient and my arm were a bit sore the next day, but it was still such a fun costume and got so many great reactions!

Strap question again sorry

Wow I'm trying to Make the exact costume it looks amazing
but am struggling with how to attach myself I know you have explained above but was the way you said secure enough? Did the velcro keep coming undone?
I had thought if that but was worried would keep coming undone as walking!!
Any help on this would be brilliant I'm struggling with this one last thing xxx
Thank you
X

This Homemade Barbie in a Box Costume was homemade from two cardboard boxes taped together and then painted a fresh coat of "Barbie Pink"! I downloaded the "Barbie" font and printed out the letters to glue onto the front of the box. In order to hold the box up, I glued two handles on the inside.
