Coolest Homemade Balloon Boy Hoax Costume 3

 Homemade Balloon Boy Hoax Costume

Homemade Balloon Boy Hoax Costume

Like a lot of people, I was captivated by the story of the little boy who was trapped in a shiny silver balloon, flying high above the Colorado plains. I watched it unfold live on CNN.

Turns out it was just that, a story. My husband and I thought it would be a cute costume to make for me and pretty funny given all the notoriety around the 'case'.

We made the Homemade Balloon Boy Hoax Costume out of an inflatable baby pool. It had 3 individual ringed chambers so we could set the pressures to match the profile of the original balloon. A backpack is threaded through a piece of pink foam board to hold it on my back. The 'lower compartment' was made out of a piece of Styrofoam packing, more foam board (circular shape), and wrapped with a windshield sunscreen.

We added pipe insulation to the baby pool in a radial pattern to approximate the 'sections' of the hoax balloon. The whole thing was wrapped in emergency Mylar blankets found in the camping section of WalMart. We used HVAC duct tape to tape it together. The whole thing weighed maybe 7 lbs.

We watched the hoax family's YouTube videos to dress as the kid did, putting on a baseball hat sideways also helped to hide my long hair. Not shown is rouge makeup I used to make my cheeks rosier, and a little 'barf bag' I carried around with me, the balloon boy kid was so nervous/scared that he puked twice on national TV!

Oh, and one last thing. In this case, there really WAS a kid in the lower compartment-- I am 5 months pregnant!

Coolest Homemade Aretha Franklin's Inauguration Hat Costume 5

It was the hat seen by millions around the world during President Barack Obama's January 2009 inauguration. Aretha Franklin wore it when she sang her soulful rendition of "My Country 'Tis of Thee" and it stole the show! Hey, even Ellen DeGeneres featured it on her daytime show.

I decided this Aretha Franklin's Inauguration Hat Costume would make a terrific costume on a larger scale because of how ridiculous it would look to be wearing an entire hat! I began it's construction by assembling plastic sprinkler piping in two circles (one for the top of the hat, and one a bit larger for the base) and joining the rings together using chicken wire and zip ties. After that, I drilled holes across the top ring to join together two PVC pipes so that I could carry it around (think Cleopatra's lounging bed that's carried around on the shoulders of her male servants). The two pipes allowed me to carry the structure on my shoulders comfortably. I chose not to cut armholes for the costume.

After the transport beams were in place, I spread chicken wire over the top leaving a hole in the middle for my head. Next, I paper-mached over the entire structure, giving it about 3 layers.

For the material, I chose heavy, dark-gray felt and sewed a "stocking" to cover the structure. For the bow, I cut a piece of felt and tied an actual "bow" and covered the edges with sequin strings and clear jewels using a glue gun. I attached it by sewing and zip-tying it to the main structure.

I took lots of fun photos that night!

Coolest Homemade Captain "Sully" Sullenberger Unique Halloween Costume Idea 14

Homemade Captain

Homemade Captain

Being from New York, Captain “Sully” Sullenberger is a hero for successfully crash landing into the Hudson River and saving over 100 lives. I decided to create a Homemade Captain "Sully" Sullenberger Unique Halloween Costume Idea to honor such a great person and pay tribute to someone who has gained such notoriety!

I made the costume from a 8 inch Sonotube and then did the tip and rear parts of the plane with chicken wire and paper mache. I created a square box to be the main section out of pine.

The biggest challenge was knowing that I would need to get through doorways so I put hinges on the wings so they folded up when needed. It was fun putting the little people on the wings and whoa the painting. Yikes. That took a while.
