Coolest Homemade Transforming Optimus Prime Costume

Last Halloween we made a Homemade Transforming Optimus Prime Costume for my son. Unlike most transformer costumes, this one actually transformed! We bought an old Power Wheels body and cut it apart with a heat torch. We kept the nose (hood, fenders and grill together), the cab, and the bed as three full pieces, which we hinged together.

We formed a foam piece into the top of the cab so that the body could rest on my son’s shoulders, and also filled a piece of red material into the gap made between the hood and the cab when he stood. He wore a black Batman costume under the truck body, which we added flames to at the sleeves and pant legs.

We also handpainted the flames on the truck body to match Optimus Prime’s, and added the Transformers logo to the hood with a plastic bonding paint. We topped it off with smoke stacks made out of painted pipe insulation.

My husband made the mask out of layered foam in the shape of Optimus’ helmet, which was nice and light for my son to wear. His candy basket was a box, which we carved into and painted to resemble the All Spark.

The costume folded out to form the full vehicle, with my son hiding inside. Then, when he stood, the nose and the rear hinged down and he turned into the transformer robot. There was also a mic/speaker which made the transformer noises and transformed my son’s voice into a transformer voice. My husband took that out of an Optimus Prime helmet my son had.

It didn’t work very well in the chaos of kids, but was lots of fun where it was a little quieter. My son, who was four, loved the costume!
