Years ago we read a suggestion in Exceptional Parent magazine to incorporate the wheelchair into the Halloween costume. We’ve had lots of fun doing just that!
This Leaf Pile Wheelchair Costume is one of the best-loved costumes we’ve ever made! I basted together fall leaves fabric into a simple poncho (basting it only so the fabric could be re-used for something else later). Then I took garlands of fall leaves and pinned them to the fabric with safety pins, using enough garlands to provide pretty full coverage. I made a separate hood using the same fall fabric and hot-glued loose silk fall leaves all over it. Then we filled a small basket with loose silk fall leaves and twined some leaves from a garland into the tines of a small rake.
Some people didn’t even see Christopher hidden in all of the leaves! Everyone loved this costume.
This costume can be worn by anyone, not just someone in a wheelchair. (Be warned that it does have some weight to it though!)
