Coolest DIY Mexican Sugar Skull Dia de los Muertos Inspired Group Halloween Costume

I love having an excuse to be colorful and authentic, so for this Halloween I dressed as a Mexican Sugar Skull (Frida Kahlo inspired). This is a great inexpensive way of making yourself notice at a Halloween party and it’s easy to do!

The best part of this DIY Mexican Sugar Skull Dia de los Muertos Inspired Group Halloween Costume is that a lot of the clothes pieces are things girls already have in their closet. The costume consist of a long black skirt, a colorful blouse(or even a corset), big jewelry (necklace, hand bangles and earrings)and finally a shawl. To add more drama you can add as many colorful flowers on your head as you like.

Lastly, I painted my face as a sugar skull. This is the part that will add the final touch to the whole look. There are great videos on how to do this make up in youtube. I was a little intimidated by the painting..but you can practice and create a basic outline on your face with a light color eye liner to create the basic shape and just go over it with face paint. You can add your own twist by making it your own (I painted hearts in mine). I added color shading, but black and white also works well. To make things even more fun, I got my friends to dress as one too! it was so much fun to see 4 sugar skulls together rather then one! and we got lots of compliments and pictures with everyone at the party.

This costume is all about being colorful and celebrating “dia de los muertos”. I love the contrast of a skull (which is usually symbolized as dark) with the lively Mexican folklore!
