Coolest Homemade Popeye and Olive Oyl

We were looking for a couple’s costume that was cheap and easy enough to DIY; Homemade Popeye and Olive Oylseemed like the perfect fit (I think I was actually inspired from previous year’s submissions on this site). The costumes were constructed with a judicious amount of duck tape, very little sewing, and fabric felt with an adhesive backing.

We put both outfits together in about an hour (we work better under pressure).

Popeye’s costume
• Pants – $14 from a second hand store
• Dixie cup hat – $2 from a military surplus store
• Corncob pipe – $5 from Party City
• Black T Shirt – $3 from Ross
• Fabric for the collar – $2 from Joann Fabrics
• Adhesive felt (two colors) – $2 from Michaels
• Synthetic Pillow Batting – $5 from Michaels
• 2 pairs of nude pantyhose – $2 from Walmart

Olive Oyl’s costume
• Skirt – $9 from Papaya
• Shirt – $5 from Forever21
• Yellow ribbon – $2 from Walmart
• Adhesive felt – $2 from Michaels

  1. Very well done. Now I want to convince my wife to tailor her costume to look more like yours (since we are dressing up as Popeye and Olive as well) you look very good.
