Coolest Homemade Chicken Costume

Halloween is next month and I wanted to have a great costume. However, I did not know what I was going to be yet! Frantically, I started brainstorming and came up with the idea of being a chicken. I wanted a costume that was both fun and age appropriate and felt that this homemade chicken costume idea fit the job description perfectly!

To start, I bought a long, white, hooded sweater from American Apparel (since most of their clothes are free of any design or text). This sweater serves as the base as the whole costume. I bought 8-10 white feather boas which I sewed on to the sweater (around the bodice and the arms). For the red comb on top of the hood, I cut up some red felt into the shape of the comb and sewed it along the curve lines (making sure to leave the bottom unsewn for stuffing). I turned the comb inside out and stuffed it with some cotton batting. I sewed the comb onto the top of the hood. Same instructions applied for the little wiggly thing on the bottom of the hood opening.

I bought a pair of yellow tights for the chicken legs. Lastly, I had to make the chicken feet. For this, I bought a pair of fake Crocs and some yellow dish gloves. I tucked the thumb and the pinky fingers inside the dish gloves and stuffed the rest of the fingers with cotton batting. I slipped the gloves on to the front of the shoes and VOILA!!! I had myself a homemade chicken costume!

For anyone wishing to give this idea a try, I’m forewarning you, it is NOT a cheap costume and requires a lot of time and effort. In total, I’d say this costume cost roughly $180- $200 to make.

The homemade chicken costume was definitely a hit though and all my friends are still talking about it today!!

  1. Thank you so much for sharing your ideas! I had to make a chicken costumes and yours was the one I wanted to follow! You are so right when you say it takes a lot of time and money. However my daughter too was a hit at the birthday party! I love your ideas. Your chicken friend from Australia.

  2. Okay I am still working on the costume but I already know my 13 year old daughter is going to look great! You are so creative. She plans on attaching her I pod to her outfit and playing the chicken dance over and over! I also hot glued instead of sewed. I am going to make myself a bluebird of happiness next. Thanks so much, great fun.
