Homemade Baby Kool Aid Man Costume

Homemade Baby Kool Aid Man Costume

This year my husband has been laid off more than once and this month has really hit us hard, so unfortunately I did not have much money to work with this year, but thank goodness I am a craft maniac, I make my kids costumes every year, so I thought of the Homemade Baby Kool Aid Man Costume for my 1 year old.

I molded the round body out of paper mache over a punching balloon like I would make a pinata after 3 layers of mache and when it dried and hardened I popped the balloon, cut off the top, bottom and two arm holes one one each side. I found an old read sweater of mine, cut it up and glued it over the paper mache.

For the eyes, nose and mouth I used material from an old pair of black socks. The trickiest part was the ice cubes. I found some white foam sheets I had and cut out 1 in squares and glued 6 sides together to make cubes, then I used the plastic from zip lock bags and glued the plastic over the cubes to give it a almost icy wet look.

For the spout and the handle I just cut cardboard from capricious boxes in the shape of a handle and a spout. Finally just threw on a pair of my daughter's old red tights on him and he already had a red turtleneck body suit!

I spent absolutely nothing on this costume. I used what I had and this I have to say is my best creation yet, this recession and lay off did not hold me back when it comes to being creative. I give it my all!

The idea for making the costume came from an obsession with drinking an access amount of Kool-Aid. I've been pretty crafty, so I knew the challenge of making it myself could actually be possible!

I ended up hitting up a local fabric store and came across a red pattern that happened to be translucent(so no one would be able to see me underneath) but yet shear enough for me to see where I was going. It was clearly meant to be!

I then purchased two hula-hoops, I glued one to the bottom of the fabric and the other to the upper middle part of the fabric leaving extra room for the top to be closed. I cut out shapes of the face from black felt then hot glued each piece onto the front of the material leaving extra to bring the top together to go over my head. I cut two holes on the side to stick my arms out. I finished the top part with a Styrofoam circle to rest on my head.

I put two square Styrofoam boxes in iridescent wrapping paper to give the effect of ice and glued them on the very top of the Styrofoam circle. I sealed the top and finished it off with a red shirt and black pants. I had some left over material that I threw over my shoes to top it off!

And that is how the my Homemade Kool Aid Man Costume was completed...OH YEA!!!
