I got it into my head that I wanted to use some sort of fake hair for my Halloween costume, so I ended up deciding on a bearded lady costume. Once I settled on that idea, I figured I needed to fully commit to being a carny. For me, this meant layers.
The beard and handlebar mustache were pretty easy to find, though, not being used to facial hair, I had some trouble drinking and eating.
For the outfit, I decided I wanted to use my corset, but added a slip and crinoline for a little modesty. While I want to be cute on Halloween, I prefer to avoid trampy. From there I added a pair of red tights, with black fishnets on top, and cowboy boots. I used an old leather belt, some scarves, and bangles to finish off the look. Conveniently, the belt also gave me a place to hang my purse so I didn’t have to keep track of it.
I also got a good reaction to the fake tattoo of a ship I put on my shoulder.
The best part of the evening was people’s reactions. No one really expects a woman with a beard. The toll booth operator we had on the way to our party tried unsuccessfully to contain his giggles. Overall, I was quite pleased with the result.
