I’d been dreaming of going as Mommy Dearest for years, but could never find the right outfit—until fate intervened at Goodwill. There it was: a long-sleeve, sheer black nightgown/dress that practically screamed, “No wire hangers!” The moment I saw it, I grabbed it like Joan Crawford grabbing a martini, and knew this was finally the year.
All I had to add was a white headband, a generous slather of white face cream to mimic her infamous nighttime beauty ritual, and of course…the ultimate accessory: a wire hanger. To me, this is the most iconic scene from the movie—pure camp gold.
At the party, older guests immediately got it and showered me with compliments. The younger ones? Well, most of them just thought I was some unhinged vampire lady wielding a hanger. Either way, I was in my glory, and that’s all that mattered.
