My costume is BirdGirl – a character from Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law. I decided on this homemade Birdgirl costume because I love the Harvey Birdman series and she is one of my favourite characters from the show. This was my first homemade costume that I’ve made, most of the pieces from scratch and I’m really happy with how it turned out.

The costume was fairly easy to make though time consuming finding all of the materials for it, mainly the right style of clothing (which I had to tweak a bit) and the mask. The wings are just made from cardboard, duct tape and silver spray-paint and I attached them by slotting them through a hole in the back of my jacket and keeping them sturdy by sewing it in place and of course duct tape.

I made the belt and the ankle pieces again with cardboard wrapped in red duct tape. The mask/helmet was by far the most difficult I tried using a store bought mask but none were the right shape and the helmet would not attach. Eventually I just made the mask out of thin plastic and for the helmet I cut a good size, sturdy rubber ball in half (which was surprisingly the right color) and attached it to the mask using proxy glue. I’m really happy with the end result and I hope you enjoy it too!
