Homemade Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots Costume

People love toys, and a life-size toy from your childhood is even better. I came up with the idea of Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots costumes because my friend and I are both the same size and we both love robots.

I took pictures of the actual toys and projected them onto cardboard using an opaque projector. This allowed me to get the proper shapes and proportions, because no one else had made costumes of this caliber before, so it was important we got it right.

The costumes are made from cast-off cardboard, red and blue duct tape, and rubber balls (for the rivets). My Red Rocker costume was constructed over two days as a prototype; kinks etc were ironed out and then we simply traced those shapes to make the Blue Bomber costume.

All the joints were hinged to allow for easy movement. They were a little tricky to get into but, once on, there were very manageable.

I loved making these. They are quite massive but lightweight. We had to watch each other's back all night, though, because people tended to come up and start hitting us. Some people thought we were transformers.

Just to let Anonymous 10-28-2010 know, these guys were not the Rock'em Sock'em Robots you saw at Championships. Those are the mascots for my team 3381 Droid Rage. These guys were a lot smarter at how they made theirs. Also, I would be interested in a copy of those templates if you would be willing to part with a PDF copy or something

Mattel recently came out with a reproduction of the 1964 version of this toy & my boys love playing with it as much as my husband & I did when we were kids. We all agreed the Rock'em Sock'em Robots DIY couple Halloween costume idea would be great for Halloween! I actually got some ideas from this website & came up with my plan...

I worked on them almost every night for about 3 mos. They're made of lots of cardboard & duct tape. The shoulders, elbows & knees are all separate pieces so the boys were able to move freely. There's rope & washers connecting each joint. The rivets are ping pong balls cut in half. I studied each section & made patterns from brown paper bags. The hardest part was cutting the cardboard but, the most time-consuming was the taping. My husband made the "ring" out of wood, pvc pipes, yellow paint & rope. He made that in 2 days!

This Rock'em Sock'em Robots DIY couple Halloween costume idea was definitely a lot of hard work but it payed-off because we were a big hit in our town's 73rd Halloween Parade! Enjoy!

Homemade Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots Costume

We decided to be a Homemade Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots Costume for one year of Halloween. It was a creative idea and we knew no one else would have them.

We got at least five boxes each and had to cut them up to measure our bodies, arms, hands, and head, as well as feet. We wanted them to fit good so they wouldn’t fall off. Our entire bodies were covered in boxes. The hardest part was making the hat, and the arm covers because we wanted them to fit comfortably. We used quite a bit of tape and spray paint and it took us at least 2 days to make.

We were a hit at the party, and actually won the costume contest, but were sadly stuck in one spot the majority of the night because they were so bulky and we couldn't move. Other than that, it was a great costume idea!

This a Homemade Rockem Sockem Robots Costume. It is made out of cardboard and hot glue. It took two weeks to build both, about 10 hours a piece. I didn't have any real plans to make the costume, I just downloaded a bunch of Rockem Sockem robot pictures from the internet and looked at them very carefully.

I would trace my arms and legs out on the cardboard and then draw the 2D part of the arms around the traced arm or leg. From there i would cut it out and hold it up to my body to sight fit it. I boxed the pieces in and held cardboard up against the boxed in pieces to form the complete piece.

The paint took a couple of coats. The gears are drawn on by marker. It won first place and I plan to go to a bar this weekend to try for $500.
