The college where Grandma worked got all new Gateway computers and Grandma wondered if we could use the cool cow motif boxes for Halloween somehow. That got us thinking…

Years ago we read a suggestion in Exceptional Parent magazine to incorporate the wheelchair into the Halloween costume. Obviously, we needed to figure something with cows in it. It occurred to us that if we added a fence to the box and some grass at the bottom, it would look like a whole bunch of cows behind the fence. Then we could make a cow costume for Christopher so he could be one of the cows in the field.

Then the question was what to do for his sister Sarah’s costume. We didn’t want to do the same thing, but we wanted the costumes to coordinate somehow. So we decided that Sarah would be a Ben & Jerry’s Banana Split and Christopher would be a Field of Ben & Jerry’s Cows!

We taped the Gateway boxes together so that they fit around Christopher’s wheelchair. Any writing on the boxes that wasn’t going to be covered by the fence or grass was painted over. We cut the fence posts and rails from brown construction paper and attached it to the boxes. The grass at the bottom edge was a strip of green plastic tablecloth left over from Sarah’s costume.

The box easily folded flat for transporting when not around the wheelchair. We attached string loops to the inside of the box for hanging the box from the wheelchair. The loops in the back were adjustable to be able to adjust the height/level of the box. A small piece of 1×1 can be used the inside edge of the box to add stability if the long side is bowing too much.

I used a pattern for the cow costume, making it out of soft flannel fabric. It was adorable, especially with the long eyelashes! Christopher was quite pleased with himself when he wore it because he knew he looked pretty cute!

Even Grandma got in on the act, dressing as a cow herself and making a sign to hang around her neck that said “Identity Crisis – This grandma found herself in a herd of cows and became ‘udderly confused’!”

This Field of Ben and Jerry’s Cows Wheelchair Costume, along with Christopher’s Leaf Pile costume, were the most favorite costumes we ever made. In 2005 we took copies of the photos to give to Ben & Jerry’s when we went on a factory tour!
