Ever wondered what Ben Franklin looked like after he was flying that kite with the key, and got struck by lightning? No problem, here he is!
We sewed a costume to look like Ben Franklin, all the materials and pattern were purchased at a local fabric store (don't forget to use those coupons!). Simply add a plain white t-shirt underneath, then add a neckcloth. We used pleated fabric with a strap that Velcroed on the back for the neckcloth, and fancy ribbon/buttons to dress up the jacket.
As for the hair, we purchased a Ben Franklin hair/glasses kit at a local costume store for about $15. Add tall black socks, and girly black-heeled shoes. You have to add a kite, so we used a box to make a kite out of cardboard, then attached yarn with a large brass key (also found at a local Nobbies, in the sherrif's department).
As for the hair, rat it up with a comb to give that electrocuted effect. Then use dark charcoal gray/black eyeshadow to add several black smudge marks to the hair and face to make the appearance that Ben was electrocuted when the lightning struck his kite.
This is a hit with the adults and the kids! Everyone seemed to remember the "story" of Ben Franklin, and recognized this costume's intentions right away!
Total Cost - $35
Comments for Coolest Electrocuted Ben Franklin Costume
This Homemade Blues Brothers Costume was one of the easiest and cheapest costumes I’ve ever done. We had originally planned to go as gangsters but as I started researching costumes I came up with this idea. I thought it was original, no one I had ever known had gone as the Blues Brothers.
My husband and I both wore black business suits and white button down shirts. We already had those on hand so there was no cost involved. We bought the wayfarers and hats on E-bay. I think the cost of those for both of us was something like $16 total. Fortunately, my husband already had two black ties on-hand from a wedding he was in. So we wore those. And we wrote JAKE and ELWOOD on our knuckles to make the tattoos they wore in the movie.
It worked perfectly. Everyone thought we were hilarious. We even almost won the best costume contest but were beat out by Sarah Palin and her moose!
Bob Ross, he was this oil painter who used to do a television show in the 70's and 80's in which he would paint these wicked scenery pics in a half an hour. He would say weird things like "this little rock wants to live by this river" it's pretty funny.
To create this Bob Ross Costume: I painted a beard on my husband, and added the wig. He wore a plaid shirt he had, and we used a piece of cardboard to make a pallet and added lots of paint colours to it. All he needed was a couple of paint brushes and he was set.
Total cost: 0.00, we took things from around the house to make this! P.S he won 3rd at the party!
