Homemade Abe Lincoln Costume

This homemade Abe Lincoln costume was more of an ensemble of purchases as opposed to original creation.

First, I grew out a beard for 3 weeks, shaving the mustache the day I wore the costume. The coat was a cheap, polyester robe from Walmart. The vest was purchased at a local store that sells suits. For the tie, I purchased a nylon strap (like on a kid’s backpack) and fashioned a bird shape to it. This took some experimentation as I could never seem to tie it the same way twice.

The top hats I found at Halloween stores were very weak, but I found a small plastic hat with a good black brim. I then bought black posterboard and wrapped the top part of the hat, cutting off the excess posterboard, creating a cylinder. I used clear tape to adhere the two ends together, which I put in the back. Oddly, I did not fasten the cylinder to the hat. As long as I didn’t lean over much, it stayed on. I believe the height of the cylinder was 14 or 15”—you’ll have to adjust to accommodate your head height.

Pretty simple, but very convincing costume with high recognition.

This "BABErham" costume was to poke fun at the idea that costume companies have a "sexy" version of every type of costume. There's never been a Sexy Abraham Lincoln, for good reason, so I decided to create a Homemade Sexy Abraham Lincoln Costume myself. I used materials I already had, high heel shoes, nude fishnet stockings, black tap shorts, black and white corset, and a black blazer. I did buy a black tophat and crepe wool and spirit gum for the beard. I made the "Vote Baberaham Lincoln" button on my word processor and laminated it with packaging tape and pinned it to my blazer with a safety pin.

It was a really successful costume in that it was funny and creepy and unique!

With an super easy rummage through my brother's and dad's closet, I was able to easily come up with John Wilkes Booth. Abe was a little different, we had to buy the shirt but he wore his own pants and we got a cheap top hat. Using a toy gun and knife, and white duct tape to make John Wilkes Booth broken foot.

The Homemade Abraham Lincoln and John Wilkes Booth Couple Costume turned out really well. We made the "exit" bullet wound in the front of his head and it turned out really well with basic Halloween make-up.

This Homemade Abraham Lincoln Costume is a salvaged child sized suit from the Thrift store with a white shirt and bow tie (also Thrift store) with a stove pipe hat made from oatmeal can plus a cardboard circle wrapped in black duct tape. Synthetic hair and spirit gum and a black make-up mole finish it off in style.
