Easier-Than-It-Looks Sugar Plum Fairy Costume

I needed a costume to wear for the Spooktacular at the library I work at. My friend suggested the Sugar Plum Fairy jokingly, but I liked the idea a lot. However, there aren’t any good costumes online for less than $230. My budget was $20. I searched Pinterest for tutu patterns. I ended up just running a thread through the center of the tulle and gathered it by hand. Then, I sewed that onto the waistband of a white skirt.

For the top, I used Simplicity pattern S0504, which I already had. I purchased the fabric from JoAnn’s, and when I cut it, I added about 3″ to the bottom to make it longer. When I cut the ‘leaves’, I cut them fabric facing down with white fabric underneath, and then sewed them together and flipped it inside out and ironed it. I just used a regular white long sleeve shirt underneath. Pointe shoes and a braided bun completed the costume. A tiara would make it look even better.

I had a lot of fun and got a lot of compliments on my costume at the Spooktacular. The next time I was working at the library, a little girl asked me if I was a real ballerina. :)
