My wife and I have a friend who had this old sword hanging on the wall in their garage. I noticed it was a replica of the claymore used in the movie Braveheart. We decided it would make a great couples Halloween costume if I dressed up as William Wallace, and she dressed up as Princess Isabelle.
We asked to borrow the sword and were surprised when we were told we could keep it! So began our quest for tartan cloth and a princess pattern from the fabric stores. The tartan kilt is cloth used for window curtains. It requires no cutting. All that needs to be done is to have enough material to wrap it properly and put a belt on (YouTube for instructions). The leather armored vest is an old leather jacket from Goodwill and re-shaped into one sleeve-less piece. I purchased aluminum rivets from an aircraft supply store and made my own special tool to hold them as I drove them into the leather. The pattern matches the rectangular plates on the real armored vest. To finalize my Homemade William Wallace and Princess Isabelle Couple Costume we bought a wig and braided/teased the hair. The day of Halloween I put on the blue and white face paint.
My wife’s costume is a princess costume pattern available from any fabric store. We tried to find as close a match to the dresses in the movie as we could. We found the headband jewelry at the Renaissance Festival.
