Coolest Strawberry Shortcake Costume

I made this costume for my friend’s 7-month-old.

It is red cotton with white eyelet sewn on for the apron. I didn’t want a separate apron for this – too many pieces, too many ties that could come loose – it didn’t seem like a good idea for a baby, so I made the apron part of the dress. I used an 80’s baby dress pattern for the dress itself, the apron parts were off the top of my head. I added the diamond pieces (fabric I already had) and then hand stitched a couple of stitches in each side using really thick embroidery thread.

The hat is made from Strawberry Shortcake licensed material. I made it super over-sized, it took 2 yards. You could use 1 yard and not have as much floppiness – I wish I had! I was really trying to match the original, but the hat kept slipping off all night. I suggest a smaller hat! It is just a gathered circle with two elliptical pieces for the brim. I elasticized the back for comfort.

The tights are actually adult Capri tights in a size XS that we found on eBay from Japan. Asian sizes are way small, my 10-year-old couldn’t fit in them, they were TINY. They fit the baby fine, we tucked the extra length into the shoes and they worked great!

The hair is just frayed yarn sewn onto some elastic lace and worn like a headband. A full wig would have been too uncomfortable.

There were tons of comments and praise for this. It is hard to find a vintage-style Strawberry Shortcake costume. The new teenage version isn’t quite as fun!

Total paid = $15.00

  1. My 3 year-old wants to be Strawberry Shortcake for Halloween, but I cant seem to find one at the stores anywhere. I hope I find one soon, but this is a very cute costume and, yes, you should put it on eBay. It would sell since they don’t sell them in the stores anywhere.

  7. WOW! I’m putting together an SS costume for myself this year, and I’m also going for the classic style, not the newer style. I was browsing online for examples and this site came up – I must say its THE cutest and authentic costume Ive seen so far. Just adorable! Great job, I hope mine comes out even half as amazing as this.

  17. This is an absolutely beautiful costume and for over a year I was in hopes that the talented lady who made this costume would start selling it on eBay. I could never find the costume on eBay, so then I went and contacted the lady through eBay and she said that she is not going to be selling this costume. I just wanted to let you all know as I kept looking on eBay and never found this lady’s strawberry shortcake costume on there.

What I did was bought a strawberry shortcake costume pattern similar to the one on here and just got someone to make it.

Hope this helps anyone who is still looking for a costume like this :)

  18. My eBay name is recycled_raggs and my email is cls0680[at]yahoo.com. Price depends on size needed, but generally $80-$100 which pays mostly for labor time. I don’t use patterns for custom jobs. I make my own patterns based on people’s measurements, so it takes a lot of work. I only do a handful a year because they are tedious – but fun!

I don’t know if the fabric is still available. I think I got it at Joann’s but I remember seeing it at WalMart maybe earlier this year and thinking how much cheaper it was there!

  19. KC,

This is an amazing costume. I can’t get over how adorable it is. I am sure it was a lot of hard work. I wish I would have found you earlier this year; that way I could have tried to have you make me a costume. You should consider selling on etsy. You can be making a fortune on these. Also, adult sizes I am sure are a lot more work and require a lot more fabric but I can see them buying them for Birthday party entertainers. I know my 4 year old would have loved to have Strawberry shortcake at her birthday party.

Thanks for posting this amazing work of art.

  20. I made these costumes for my twin daughters for Halloween 1982. Although it doesn’t show well in the picture, the hat was a small print of strawberries on pink background. The red yarn was sewn into the hat which was stuffed with tissue paper. The socks were cheerleader socks purchased from J Penney catalog that I cut off the toe and restitched to make them fit. They won the Grand Prize at the Halloween Costume contest.

  21. I really love this costume. I have not seen one anywhere near as good as this one. Am having a Strawberry Shortcake theme for my daughter’s 1st Birthday party next April 2011. Would really love to buy one and was wondering if you would be able to make one for me? I too think you could make a fortune with this. You are very talented.

  28. Thank you to everyone who has left such kind comments about my work. I really didn’t think it would be this popular! I get emails about this costume at least monthly all year round, and I’m grateful for your appreciation of my sewing and I SO wish I could help everyone who contacted me. I made this costume in 2008, and at the time, it was a side job for me to create custom costumes for anyone who requested them. It was a great hobby and I enjoyed it immensely! However, the last couple of years, my kids reached that aged where they have sports and music and friends and extracurricular activities pretty much constantly, and I started coaching sports and playing myself, so things changed a little. I have not been able to sew on the side like I once did. While I really wish I could help everyone on here who sees and enjoys the costumes I created, I just haven’t been able to find the time to put into them that they should have. Please feel free to use my photos and ideas if you are able to find someone you know who can sew. I do appreciate all the nice complements and praise and I hope I have at least been able to inspire you in your costuming! When my kids make it to the age where they can drive themselves to activities (creepy) and don’t want me to coach or watch because I’m embarrassing, I will be back ready to sew once again!!! GOOD LUCK TO ALL!

  29. Cute. What was the pattern number that you used for the dress? I have quite a number of older patterns that my mother used when my children were small, so it may be one that I have. Thanks for your help. Alice

  30. @Alice: I don’t use patterns, so I wish I could be more helpful! Patterns confuse me!! I end up ditching them when I try :) I’m sure any pattern for a simple baby/toddler dress will work. I can tell you if you want puff sleeves and the pattern doesn’t have them, make the shoulder part twice as big (wider and slightly longer) as its supposed to be and gather it as you sew it across the TOP of the shoulder. That will create a puff sleeve. This is also how I made the hat, for the most part. Otherwise, any dress pattern with long sleeves should work. – GOOD LUCK!

  31. Youre right, Alice – I did use a pattern for the base of this come to think of it. It was Simplicity 5817 – I found it on Google :) My grandmother gave me a tote full of old patterns a decade or so ago, and I only ever used 2 of them, so I got rid of them a while back. I remember that one though. I changed it a bit, too – ruffle at the bottom and I did add the “apron.”
