Coolest Mario and Luigi Costume

My two sons wanted to have a costume theme together but couldn’t agree on anything. They love video games of course and I suggested a Mario and Luigi costume, but we didn’t like the ideas we had seen. We came up with Bobble Head Mario and Luigi.

Using the kitchen table for a month was a sore spot with hubby, but it was worth it. Two beach balls and Styrofoam, paper mache’, craft paint, felt for the hats and logo, hot glue (with blisters!), fuzzy yarn for the hair. Preowned overalls and sweatshirts.

Painted wooden circle for buttons. These were a bit heavy and I didn’t want the kids to get hurt so we constructed a back and head support from PVC, duct tape and old school backpacks. Cut large slits in the mustaches so they could see and breathe of course!

They were the happiest boys on the block and we saw priceless brother bonding! Oh and now we have the kitchen table back, no more “picnics” on the living room floor. Hubby is happy, kids not so much!

  1. Could you give more detailed instructions on how you made the Mario bros. heads? Those are absolutely incredible!

  2. Yes, those are amazing! I, too, would love to know how you constructed the costumes — particularly the heads. Do you mind sharing the instructions? My 5 year old would be the happiest if I could recreate this costume. Thanks so much!

  3. I loved your costumes! We have a trailer filled with retro arcade games that we rent out. We are in several parades a year and would love to recreate your costumes! Please help?

  4. I purchased the same costume on line…identical, they make them overseas. I bought mine two years ago and they look fabulous…funny how these turned out identical to those I purchased overseas…right down to the material and color for skin

  5. I see someone purchased “identical” costumes to my Mario and Luigi – but I can assure you they probably aren’t. These took me over a month to make. I used a lot of paper mache. They were quite heavy so we had to construct backpacks with pvc piping to hold the heads up so my kids wouldn’t have sore necks. I would be curious to see these “overseas purchased” costumes. The bobbleheads I made are hard shelled too – are the ones you found soft?
