Coolest Lion and Tin Man Costumes

I decided before Halloween 2008, that my husband, cousin and myself would be the lion, tin man and the scarecrow. I have a really creative mind and it definitely got carried away. My first inspiration for these Lion and Tin Man Costumes came from lots of research into prosthetic masks. I love not being able to be recognized.

I found a lion foam prosthetic masks on a great web site. The lion started coming together. I did a lot of research on the Wizard of Oz through images search. I ordered 4 wigs from another website and began putting the lion together. The lions hair was fabulous. I made a great big tail out of one of the wigs.

The scarecrow was put together with bullap material from Walmart. The tin man was assembled from insulation from home depot. His buttons were bud light tops.

Our costumes blew every Halloween costume away. We won first place at two bars, and our closest friends did not recognize us at a family party. I hope you like the pictures.

  1. You’ve done a wonderful job. Looking to make a tin man home made costume for my 4yr.old grandson.

He was chosen to be the tin man But it has to be something comfortable. I was told by his
daycare provider. He is so excited. Can you please help me with some feed back. From the
photo I saw you have done a beautiful job.
    Thank You,

  2. Very fun costumes! To the tin man idea needer- my son is 6’2′ and about 240 and was cast as Tin Man but no existing costume that was not lame was going to fit right. I talked with my theater major daughter who told me to spray liquid starch on fabric and then it could be spray painted and the starch acts like primer. We found a great woodsy looking dark brown quilted vest and gray turtleneck and put them together with some silver parachute pant style sweats-treated it all with starch and spray painted it with aluminum colored paint (we didn’t want it too shiny since Tin Man is weatherized.) We had to get a large funnel to paint the same since his big old head looked ridiculous in any commercial Tin Man headpieces. I got everything at the thrift store and spent about 15 dollars!
