Coolest Illuminated Costume

My Homemade Illuminated Costume is inspired on the 2011 finalists in America’s Got Talent- Team Illuminate. Their use of electroluminescent wire looked like a fun idea and up my alley, so I ran with it for a Halloween costume. I read for a few hours online on how the wires are cut and soldered and attached to clothing. I went to a secondhand clothing store and found a mechanic’s, one piece jumpsuit. It was blue and figured I could RIT dye it, but that didn’t really work too well other than tinting it a little, but it’s good enough. I found an old pair of sneakers that I haven’t worn in years and spray painted with plastic black paint. I did the same with a $3 Jason mask. Then added gloves that I found hanging around my house in the winter clothing that looked like they would work.

Then it’s time for the El wire. I got on Ebay and ordered the wire, inverters, plugs, adapters, and battery packs. In total I have 30 feet of blue- 40 feet of green and 20 feet of red. I have a sound activated tee shirt piece that I stripped from a $13 Ebay tee shirt that moves with sound that is my chest piece. All the wire on the suit is sewn on, by hand, with fishing line. The shoes and mask are super glued on. It is powered by 20 batteries, 2 for the mask, 2 for the chest, 8 for the top inverter, and 8 for the bottom inverter. 30 volts total.

This Homemade Illuminated Costume took about 90 hours of construction and $140 to build. As you can tell I have a geeky electronics side.
