Linda’s Awesome Homemade Halloween Peacock Costume

I wanted to be a Peacock for Halloween for several years. So, this year I went all out for it and made a Homemade Halloween Peacock Costume!

I covered the body of the Halloween peacock costume with cut peacock feathers that I cut further down (to get as many of those beautiful eyes of the feathers as possible); these were hot glued onto a black corset (great in this situation because of its boning), and a pair of high-waisted black undies. Wearing these two pieces together covered in feathers made it look like it was one seamless piece (not like two separate pieces).

I cut peacock swords (long blue-green feathers), and hot-glued two to each side of the corset (front left/right, back right/left) to create a fanning motion of color.

I used uncut, three-foot peacock feathers to create the tail (the crowning glory of the costume!). Then, I glued three uncut feathers vertically on top of each other to simulate the spray of a real peacock’s tail. I then glued two of those sets back-to-back so that it would look the same from the front as well as the back. These feathers I glued in bunches into a fan shape onto thin black poster board, then cut the poster board into a “V” shape; I used peacock herl (long, thick, blue-green strands of feathers) to cover any poster board.

This fan of feathers was then able to be slid in and out of the inside of the top back of my corset (so that I could get in and out of a car!), and stand straight up in a perfect fan the entire night!

My hair was styled in a Mohawk, twirling small sections into rolled knots down the center of my head, and finishing with a pompadour at the front. I shaded my eyelids with dark blue, electric blue, green, purple, and gold, and topped them with two-inch dramatic blue false eyelashes. I used black face paint to swirl two loops next to my eyes and down the sides of my face, and filled in the swirls with my eyeshadow colors.

This Halloween peacock costume was my favorite costume I’ve ever made, and I’m glad I get to share it with you!

More About This Halloween Peacock Costume

Note from Elad: We want to thank Linda for her dedication in answering all of your questions below regarding her awesome Halloween peacock costume. We’ve summarized all of Linda’s answers to make it easier for everyone else who drops by and doesn’t want to go through all the many comments below (although the discussion is very lively and fun to read). Thanks Linda!

You can never buy too many feathers for your Halloween peacock costume! haha, It’s better to have too many than too little.

I ordered the peacock feathers from continentalfeathers.com.

This is a direct copy of my order:

  • 1 x Peacock Swords, Cut 12-14″ – per 50
  • 1 x Strung Peacock Herl – per foot
    Size & Amount 5″ – 7″ – Per Oz.
  • 1 x Natural Eyed Peacock Sticks 30-35″ – per 50
  • Natural Eyed Peacock Sticks, Cut 12-14″ – per 100
  • 1 x Natural Eyed Peacock Sticks 30-35″ – per 100

My feather order ended up being pretty exact. I could ALWAYS have used more feathers though. If anything, I’d say order a little more, NOT a little less (always better to be over-prepared than under-prepared!).

I just glued a few of the peacock “swords” in a fanning motion on the corset. You can’t really see it in the picture. They are thin strips of a blue peacock feather. That way you can glue them wherever you’d like to break up the monotony of standard peacock feathers. I started my corset feathers from the top, down. Once you start gluing the feathers together you’ll see how it works, and it will all make sense!

The Peacock Swords

As for the peacock swords: You can’t really see them in the pictures too well. I just made a decorative choice and put then in a diagonal swoop across the front (left & right sides). You can use them to make any little decorative choices you want, though!

The Peacock Herl

The peacock herl was used to cover up the base of the tail feathers. When I glued them onto the cardboard, you could still see this cluster of tail-ends. So, I glued the herl over it so it just looked like the feathers were spraying out of this gorgeous green/blue grass. The herl kind of looks like hula skirt grass, so you’ll understand when you see it! Then I hot-glued the peacock feathers ALL over the costume (front & back). I hate when things only have design on the front! I put the hot glue directly on the feathers. You’ll use a TON of glue, but they WILL stay on! I did not lose a single feather, and everything on my costume was hot-glued.

Creating the Peacock Tail

There are a lot of questions pertaining to how the tail slid into the corset in my Halloween peacock costume. It’s SUPER easy. As you can see in one of the pictures, I glued the feathers in a v-fan shape onto a thin piece of posterboard. After that picture was taken, I then cut off that one long piece of that one feather stick in the middle so that everything would be even.

I then cut the sides of the posterboard off so that there was no posterboard without a feather glued to it (make sense?). So now the feathers are glued in a v-fan shape to posterboard, and the posterboard is trimmed to be in a v-fan shape so that there’s no extra. Since the bottom of the tail is now in a pointed v-shape, it is very easy to just slide into the inside/back of your corset. So the tail will be touching the skin of your back.

The tail feathers actually just slide right into the back of your corset! Put the corset on, then slide the tail feathers in. (Make sure the tail feathers will be touching your skin, the corset will be outside of the tail feathers).

The Corset

Don’t spend hundreds of dollars on the corset of your Halloween peacock costume! That’s one of the least expensive parts! Mine was a simple Dream Corset from Fredericks, they’re usually about $60, but they’re on sale for $39. Mine was black.

I did NOT attach the undies to the corset (I just pulled them on). There are so many feathers on both the corset and undies that when they’re on you, no one will be able to tell that they’re two separate pieces.

And the time it will take to complete the costume will vary. I just worked on it for a little bit each day (you can watch TV while you do it, it passes the time). I started weeks before Halloween, though, so I could try it on and make any needed changes beforehand.

Walking Around with the Tail

It actually wasn’t hard to navigate with the tail at all! Since it’s detachable, I just took it off (slid it out of the corset) when I would get in or out of a car. When you’re walking around, people are so fascinated with the costume that no one’s bumping into you or anything! Haha

I also went to a house party later in the evening (we were at the West Hollywood Costume Parade earlier). It wasn’t even an issue in a house/cramped quarters with a bunch of people passing you in hallways. It wasn’t uncomfortable at all! You feel so sexy in it, and everyone’s complimenting you. It’s a lot of fun to wear this Halloween peacock costume!

I thought about selling myHalloween peacock costume, but I just can’t bring myself to do it. Thanks for the offer, though, it’s a great compliment!

You guys are awesome, thanks for all the compliments! I really wish I had photos of the back to show those of you who asked. But, I actually don’t have any pictures from the back. I know, I know, how did I NOT get pictures from the back?! But it looks exactly like the front. The directions I gave, and the few pictures I put up should be helpful, though. I’m excited to see you guys’ versions this year!

Exciting to see all the Peacock Costumes here…

  35. I was so inspired by your masterpiece, I decided to go for it this year, after dreaming about it for years. The other kicker was that I actually SAW a live male peacock wandering by the side of the road near a famous restaurant that keeps them as pets. I grew up seeing them on that road going to and from my grandparents’ house, who have since both passed away. So to see the peacock as such a rare treat, it told me, that’s it, this is the year.

So, I am starting with these wings from Party City, as a shortcut (by the way all these links are totally safe, they are to legit sites and pics, I am no troll)

    http://tinyurl.com/2dy3263

And I am going to fill it in all the way around with real feathers and also cover the front, which is sadly unadorned with any peacock feathers. I will also add a tail to the bottom, made of a black boa adorned with a few feathers and cut into shorter pieces.

I am going to wear this dress:
    http://tinyurl.com/25z8dhv

And use feathers to adorn the straps all the way to the back.

    I found fringe:
    http://tinyurl.com/2bu4j3p

Which I will wrap around the skirt of the dress.

    I will wear these hose:
    http://tinyurl.com/2aytwmu

And then make a hairpiece (which will really pop in my red hair) and shoe clips with feathers to add to my teal blue silk pumps.

The final touch will be these peacock eyelashes!

    http://tinyurl.com/29eh299

I talk the talk like it’ll be soooo easy. We’ll find out for sure when the items all get here and I whip out the glue gun!

I figured, since this is the year I am celebrating my 30th(!) birthday ON THE 30th of October, I should go all out. And with your help, I really am!

Thanks so much, you Linda and everyone with tips!

    Meg

The owner of this site kindly put up additional pictures I gave her that I thought would be helpful (you can see them under the main pic), but all the other pictures I have are just me in the costume.

For some reason, I didn’t get a shot of the back of the tail, but it looks exactly like the front.

The directions I laid out at the top are exactly what I did, but I’m happy to help anyone who has detail questions.

Once you start gluing the feathers together you’ll see how it works, and it will all make sense!

  49. Ahh, it sure would be nice if Linda had the time to make a web page with a million pics of every angle of her design, charts, graphs, detailed schematics, and so on. But I get the impression that she simply doesn’t have the time. She’s made a few comments, answered the most important questions, and even shown everyone exactly how many feathers she bought.

Maybe now we should give her a BREAK, thank her for the info she HAS shared, and then try to make our OWN costume. Otherwise, guess what. Everyone will be in matching peacock costumes and it won’t be unique anymore.

Isn’t it more fun to figure it out for yourself, which is kind of the point of designing your own costume and then showing it off to other people? If you are handed the step-by-step instructions down to the final feather, where’s the fun, the creativity, the INGENUITY that makes homemade costumes like Linda’s so great to begin with?

Yes, I am making my own peacock costume this year and Linda’s example gave me some great visual ideas and best of all, an excellent resource for feathers. But beyond that, I am off on my own. She’s probably busy making something new and awesome for this year anyhow.

I wanted to read comments about how other people were doing their costumes, which details they were going to play up, what new resources they’d discovered and can share, what spectacular concept they’d got planned, all that. But every comment is “Please email me more pictures and directions.”

I suppose Linda is sitting on a goldmine based on the number of people who have asked for more help. She could sell a pamphlet and make piles of cash. And good for her! But I guess I expected something different from this site if all it is is people copying one design and abandoning originality.

Humbug. That’s what I’ll be next year. A humbug.

(To make my fan bigger, I clamped a wooden Asian fan to the feather fan tail I made, since it also had peacock feathers and widened the spray of feathers)

I modified the corset since I wanted to reuse it and just pinned a patch of feathers to a piece of felt!

I also made shoe clips with black and teal tule and tied a peacock feather to it.

I embellished the peacock feathers with rhinestones I ordered from amazon.com in teal, emerald and white crystal.

I cant wait to parade around in it this weekend!

  67. I am making a peacock costume this year and I happen to come across this site and i’m hoping you can help me! I individually sewed all of my peacock feathers on my corset and when I tried it on, all of the feathers spread apart and it looked like a mess! Needless to say I was devastated after all those hours of work! When I first tried to hot glue them the glue didn’t hold the feather down. Did you put the glue directly on the eye of the feather or did you put it on the stem? Please help if you can!

    Reply
  68. I put the hot glue directly on the feathers. You’ll use a TON of glue, but they WILL stay on! I did not lose a single feather, and everything on my costume was hot-glued.
No worries, you’ve got more than enough time to glue the feathers on! And you can fill in all those spaces with more feathers, and the costume will look great :)

  78. Hi Sammy13 – My feather order ended up being pretty exact. I could ALWAYS have used more feathers though, haha. If anything, I’d say order a little more, NOT a little less (always better to be over-prepared than under-prepared!).
As for the peacock swords: You can’t really see them in the pictures too well. I just made a decorative choice and put then in a diagonal swoop across the front (left & right sides). You can use them to make any little decorative choices you want, though!
The peacock herl was used to cover up the base of the tail feathers. When I glued them onto the cardboard, you could still see this cluster of tail-ends, so I glued the herl over it so it just looked like the feathers were spraying out of this gorgeous green/blue grass. The herl kind of looks like hula skirt grass, so you’ll understand when you see it!

  79. This costume is the best.

I have ordered the feathers and am bidding on bustiers on ebay.

I certainly don’t have your body and am trying to decide on the bottoms; my legs are horrible, so I want more coverage.

You are so creative, I was wondering if you might have any ideas on bottoms, style and color for more coverage.

And, I going to wear this on a cruise and have to get it there, airlines or shipping. Would you have any thoughts on how to do the tail feathers, to ship the easiest? I have thought about putting it on two boards and putting the boards together once there or putting the feathers on paper that would roll up (to put in a shipping tube) and then glue it on a stiffer backing once there.

  87. I made this costume this year and I am so not crafty. Linda gave great instructions and it is coming out just fine. I think her’s is better, but my husband just says that is because I am being a perfectionist:)

I am the one transporting this across country to wear on a cruise. I had asked if anyone had suggestions for a good way to put it together to transport it. I figured that out also. I glued the tail feather’s to a thick piece of felt and am able to fold it in half (long ways, not folding the feathers at all) and slide it into a long tube. I will then be able to carry it onto the plane (like people do with fishing rods, guitars, etc), I will just tape a picture to it, so security will know what they are looking at. I will then glue it to cardboard (and I am taking some extra tail feathers and the glue gun to fill in if it spreeds at the fold) when I get it onto the ship.

Unfortunately, I don’t have the body of the original Linda and will be wearing long, black slacks with it. I tried the high waisted underwear/shapewear, tight leggings (capri and long). My cousin, a professional photographer, says my legs are fine and felt the long pants would take away. They don’t.

Linda, can you explain how you did your hair? I have shoulder length hair.

  88. Where did you use the swords?

I got my corsett off ebay for $16.00 (that included the shipping). It was dark blue and gold, with lace. It only really should be dark, but doesn’t have to be black; the eye feathers cover the color and I trimmed off the lace.

I also saw corsetts at Walmart and Target.

  89. Hi Linda!
Great Costume! I’m interested in recreating the tail. I just need to know how many feathers you used on the tail.

So if I understand this correctly you glued three feather together and then took two sets of those feathers and glued them together with a piece of poster board in the middle. How many rows of feathers did you use, counting the two sets of feathers as one row.

    Thanks
    Liz

  93. Hi folks. I made a really fun and slightly less sexy take on this costume last year. I swapped the bustier and frilly hot pants for a flapper dress strung with peacock feathers. I needed to be more demure, my entire family, grandfather to kid cousins, was at my combined Halloween/ 30th birthday bash!

When handing out candy Halloween night, I had parents asked me to pose for pictures with their kids!

Since Linda is forever being bombarded with requests for more info, I thought it might be a good idea to dedicate an entire blog to tips for peacock costumes. Show of hands? I just need like 3 people to show sincere interest.

If so I will set one up, and with Linda’s permission include all of her directions and pics, as well as any from other folks who decided to “wing it” and design creations inspired by, but not a direct replication of, Linda’s costume.

I still have about 100 4 foot feathers at the very least!

    Reply
  94. You can never have too many feathers! Make sure you create a dense pattern of “eyes” and fill in everywhere you see the slightest space.

Also, do not forget to do front AND back facing tail fans. Not only does it make you turn heads coming and going, but it makes for the dense, controlled tail you see Linda sporting.

Fan it out only as far as your supply of feathers will let you. Start from the center and work outwards to the sides. Play around. Give yourself a whole day or two to just mess with the feathers and thinking hard about how you, not Linda, but YOU, would put this together.

Trust me, a TALL (only slightly wider, peeking from behind you) detailed, lustrously thick, soft tail is important because 1) it’s more manageable in crowded parties and on the dance floor and 2) the wow factor comes from the height of the tail, showcasing the details of the feathers, not the width of the fan. THAT is what made Linda’s costume stand out- that and being photographed with an orange background, plus the important detail that she is *breathtakingly gorgeous*!

Anyway, as long as most of the luxuriant, iridescent tail is displayed above your head, rather than blocked by your head or any hair accessory, or behind your back, you will be a jaw-dropping hit!!

  96. Meg, isn’t this kind of like a blog? I don’t mind if another forum is needed for this, but I don’t mind coming back to this site (it is actually in my favorites).

I just finished up the costume and will do a full try on (makeup, hair, etc) this weekend, before I start packing for my upcoming cruise.

I modified it also, instead of the panties/hot pants, Linda wore, I am just wearing nice slacks. At first, I thought it would take away from it, but it doesn’t and the focus really is on the top half.

I thought the corset would be too sexy, but it also covers up a lot. It is a girl’s cruise and I thought my husband might be uncomfortable with it being too sexy, but he told me that my swimsuit actually reveals more skin (and it is a full piece for a middle aged woman).

I ended up ordering pretty much the same feathers Linda did, but actually added 100 more of the long feathers. Out of 200, I have used about 150 and will take the extras with in case there is any damage in transportation.

I was going to do my own shoe clips with feathers on it, but with the long pants that really isn’t necessary. However, for those people that want to do that, you don’t have to buy new shoes, just use old one’s and make shoe clips. I couldn’t find any “shoe clips” to decorate, but did find medium wide blank barretts that one could glue the feathers on to – at Hobby Lobby or Michael’s.

  97. Linda #2: this is more of a message board than a blog. I am suggesting creating a detailed page featuring pictures, and all of Linda’s answers collected in one place. That way hundreds of people don’t have to keep asking her to email them more pictures or answer further detailed questions about how she did it.

I can show my own costume from last year, to add more variety and options.

This will be only for static information; requests to Linda for more pictures will de discouraged, because the point would be to share all the information she is able to share, all in one place, for everyone to see. Easier than her emailing constant requests individually.

Linda The Creator has been wonderfully forthcoming with giving what advice she is able to give. I think she deserves a break from the barrage of messages, and that everyone would benefit from one centralized source for information, available to all, at all times.

So please stay tuned this week. It will be very simple, no bells and whistles, just pics, directions, and a link to Continental Feathers as well as where you can get some special touches:

peacock feathers strung on ribbon to make a fringe around a dress or skirt or corset, fasteners, feather pads, feather clips, feather necklaces, boas, feather earrings, and, oh yes, feather eyelashes. Don’t overlook your fingernails: you can even layer purple, turquoise, and green for a peacock effect on them!

I *hope* to deliver all promised, but all I can do is my best.

I also want to strongly encourage everyone to put their *own* creativity into it! You don’t need to be a carbon copy of Linda, but rather be celebrated for your own *ingenuity and imagination!* YOU’LL BE ALL THE MORE PROUD AND COMFORTABLE IF YOU IMPROVISE AND DO WHAT WORKS BEST FOR YOU!!! You can do it!

Linda #2 – that is funny, I almost signed that way, as that is my signature on my cruise site.

I, for one, would love to see everyone’s pictures. Also, Linda has said many times, she doesn’t have any other pictures. I think it was wonderful of her to post the pictures and directions she had.

She has gone and gotten famous. I ordered my feathers from Continental before they had her picture, how awesome is that.

  110. How many feathers did you use specifically for the tail. I’m doing a similar design with the tail, but something completely different for the bodice, so I put in an order for 100 of the 30-35′ feather and 50 of the 12-14′ feathers. I think that should be enough of the actual peacock feathers but wanted your opinion.

  112. Thanks so much for the idea for the cardboard, already had a black/turquoise corset from previous fancy dress so its worked out ridiculously cheap for me.

Ordered my feathers from eBay and didn’t even need to buy a hot glue gun, i just used lots of good quality sellotape and squeezed some superglue over each bit afterward to make sure it all stayed.

Also sandwiched it all between 2 pieces of card that I covered in purple fabric to make it look a bit neater and put blue/purple little feathers along the back.

Very excited to wear it all now! Teaming it with a little black skirt and peacock earrings ordered from same ebay seller

If so how would you go about applying the feathers? 124. Hi Linda! I have been in love with your rendition of the peacock costume for over a year now. Finally decided this was the year. I have the tail near finish with the exception of a few swords maybe and then trimming and covering the bottom portion. Looks GORGEOUS on my floor doesn’t look terribly big….and then I hold it up and it is wider than most doors! I could probably take at least 2 rows off each side, maybe 3? And then the outer tips would graze through. Did you have a door problem? I know you said people were in such awe that they didn’t complain, but perhaps mine ended up a touch bigger. Just curious. I would show you a photo if I knew how on here. Thanks, September-lee

  125. Whenever I walked through a door I would just turn a little to the side and go right on through. Since you’re most likely going to be hanging out in an open space most of the time, it’s honestly not an issue. Whenever you walk into a room, or head to the bathroom, just turn a tad to the side and walk right in!

  127. I have attempted to make this costume and so far it looks great but I have one question, I glued a bunch of feathers to the high waisted undies and when i tried them on, all the feathers stretched and the glue came off on some feathers, i even bought a size larger than i normally wear so it would be easier to take on and off. How did you work around this? Did you not have the same issue? I used a lot of hot glue also…

    thanks!

    Reply
  128. Hi – I, too, bought a size larger in the undies. When the hot glue dries, it contracts, so the larger size is needed so that it will contract down to a normal size. Keep putting on the undies (taking them on and off will help to see where the problem areas are). When I first tried them on, a lot of the feathers splayed out, so I had to cut off some pieces that were sticking out, and glue down most of the other pieces. I would say you’ll end up gluing the entirety of the feathers that are on the undies (they need to have glue on the entire feather to keep it held down).
    Hope that helps!

I was just wondering if you could send me some more pictures of the front of yours (potentially one back photo too), but I don’t think I’m going to do the huge tail feather (I’ll probably make a mini version of it). I will be wearing a tutu with it (most probably). If you can send me some pictures of close ups as to how you glued/placed the feather eyes around the front and sides, that would be great.
