From the world of super heroes, villains and special powers, I present to you me, myself and I – Plezhette dressed as the rebellious spy character Mystique from the X-Men movies and Marvel Comics.  Mystique is a fierce fighter for mutant rights, notorious for her blue scaly skin, fire red hair and glowing eyes.  She is a shapechanger in which her special powers allows her to impersonate anyone.  Besides appearing as anyone, Mystique can alter her vocal cords to match any voice and can be anything you want her to be, except predictable so watch out!

I have always been fascinated by the awesome, special skills that each mutant has in the movie X-Men.  But I was most captivated by the striking color scheme of Mystique.  Being that there is not an actual Mystique costume to buy in stores or online, I was presented with the challenge of figuring out a way to replicate Mystique’s reptilian like body and face. I found a complete unisex body suit on Ebay and a 5×7 snakeskin stencil template.  I used fabric spray paint from the garage and had my mother strategically place and spray the stencil onto the body suit section by section while wearing it to create Mystique’s scaly-skin (quite time consuming).  To create the reptile texture for my face, I used gray eyelash glue to form a variety of shapes and dried the glue with the blow dryer.  After my face dried, I painted my face with blue Mehron grease paint and enhanced the scales with four different eye shadow colors, set it with setting powder and finalized my face by spraying it with a barrier sealer.  I finished it off with White Out Halloween contact lenses and a red wig that closely resembles the short hair cut of Mystique.

The public reaction to my interpretation of Mystique is quite amazing!!  Wherever I have worn this costume, people instantly yell out Mystique acknowledging their familiarity of this character, gasps and compliments in amazement and admiration plus tons of photo taking with fanatical strangers.  It is probably the feeling and reaction that celebrities get when recognized in public but super fun because I literally get to metamorphosize into a mysterious, intriguing character for one night of the year.  People keep telling me I should attend Comicon as Mystique.  She may have to make an appearance next year since she is already a hit on Halloween.

This is my interpretation of Mystique. Aloha, enjoy and Happy Halloween!
