A few years ago, my best friend and I decided to dress our team up for our volleyball finals. We got such an enthusiastic response from the people on the courts that we made it a tradition to dress up every Wednesday evening for our matches. That’s 24 costumes every year! And what makes our costumes different from many of the costumes out there is that we have to pick costumes that are easy to play in (ie comfortable!) since we've made a pact among ourselves to play at least one full game of beach volleyball wearing all parts of the costume unless they are causing us to lose points (ie wings hitting the net when swinging). People come onto the court thinking we're silly and should be easy to beat but they are surprised when we end up winning! Our goal is to keep the cost to less than $5 a person each week, but we often do it for much less than that. Our trick? Thrift stores, time, creativity, and LOTS of hot glue! Almost everything we get comes from a thrift store where pieces are $.50 or $1 and we can usually reuse lots of our pieces. It’s gotten to the point now that if we show up to play and we are not already in costume, people will literally complain that we are being lame! And just to be clear, no one else dresses up…it’s just us out of about 200 people! And we love every minute.
