Homemade Scarecrow Halloween Costume

This Homemade Scarecrow Halloween Costume was so easy, and we got so many compliments! We started with a hand-me down pair of overalls. Then we took a few patches of material from some older clothes that were now rags! We used hot glue and applied the patches randomly on the back and front of the overalls (the hot glue allowed us to easily remove the patches and return the overalls back to functional clothes afterward!).

We then bought two pieces of yellow felt, one to cut four cuffs, two for the bottom of his pants andtwo for his wrists. We cut the cuffs to look fringed and applied the two to the bottom of his pants with glue. You can either glue the other two to the cuffs of a flannel shirt or hold them in place with a rubber band or hair tie around the wrist!

The second piece of felt we cut a hole in the middle and fringed all around the outer edges! The felt clings to itself, so you don’t need any adhesive or Velcro, just overlap in the back when you put it around the child’s neck and tuck center into the top of the shirt! The only other expense, we went a thrift store where they had a stack of straw hats for 60 cents a piece!

Total expense for this outfit was about $1 and it probably took about 1 hour to assemble!

Have you ever wanted to pass down the traditions of Halloween to your kids, then the best thing that I could do for them was to make sure that their Halloween costumes are always handmade. Growing up, my mother always made my costumes by hand and used her imagination to bring these costumes to life and they always were a hit during Halloween.

My son wanted to be something funny for Halloween. We made him a scarecrow that couldn't scare. We attached a painted black parrot to the top of his hat. We hollowed out a pumpkin and he used it as his head. We got some clothes from a thrift store and we used some old bamboo sticks as his cross that he hangs on.

The homemade scarecrow costume is relatively inexpensive and it works great for people that are on a budget and want a great homemade costume. I hope you enjoy this costume.

Homemade Scarecrow Costume

This is my daughter Kinley's Homemade Scarecrow Costume. She is a Not So Scarey Scarecrow. She wanted to be a scarecrow, but I wanted to make her something out of the norm. It was made with 20 yards of tulle, several different colors lots of ribbons, sunflowers and rafia. She even has rafia ribbon arm bands.

The crow wand is her favorite part of the costume. It's just a crow on a dowel rod. The hat is an old one we already had. I cut the brim out and added rafia underneath so she had scarecrow hair.

She loves this costume and I really enjoyed the time we spent together on it!

My almost 3 year old Princess has decided she would like a "scarecrow" party!! Random, I know but it is her birthday. I have been looking and looking on the net, trying to find something scarecrow like but beautiful at the same time and stumbled across your amazing outfit. I don't sew but I'm going to have a go at this anyway! Gosh, I wish you were available for a sewing lesson.

Well done on such a gorgeous design. I love it.

Where did you get the crow for the wand?

Hi there,
Just wondering where you got the crow for the wand. It is just perfect and I have been looking everywhere and cannot locate one.

I'm thinking I might have to put a pumpkin or corn on the top! But would rather the crow.

Thanks

gorgeous!

Homemade Scarecrow Siblings Costumes

My children dressed as Homemade Scarecrow Siblings Costumes this year. I bought overalls and plaid shirts from Yardsales, bucket hats too. I glued fabric patches on the clothes from Halloween material, and had raffia sticking out.

On my daughter's costume I glued raffia to the sleeves and pant cuffs but on my son I thought it would be too itchy for him so I did not add this to his costume. I add sunflowers and ribbon to the hats and made the "hair" from fleece, and glued that to the hat.

I painted their faces, the total cost for 2 costumes was about $10.00.
