My daughter wanted to be a Rainbow Bird Costume. After three years of princesses, I decided that I HAD to make it work. Since I could not buy one, I made it.

I made a sort of cape thing, by cutting a half circle with the diameter equal to her outstretched arm length out of rainbow fabric. I did this on the fold so that when sewn together it would be rainbow on both sides. Then I added two triangles to the circle (on both the front and the back) to make it a little more full, before sewing it together.

Next, I added felt 'feathers' cut from a rainbow of felt colors and adhered with fabri-tac fabric glue.

I bought the mask from Walmart but it was all pink, so I added some rainbow feathers and some different colored glitter glue to make it rainbow. The tie dye leggings are from Etsy. Then I just draped the cape over her shoulders and safety pinned the cape to her shirt (which was chosen as one of the colors of the rainbow - to be her bird belly).

I may add a strap to go across her neck or around her arms to hold the cape on better than the safety pins. The idea of the detachable cape was that I wanted to be able to wash the main portion of the costume.

It's a great costume, really cute, and great way of doing the wings! I came across this while searching for realistic costume wings, and this is one of the simplest, most effective ones I've seen yet!

Great costume!

Thank you so much for sharing! We're doing a musical production in the spring with many birds as characters in our youth theater at Good Sam Arts (GoodSamArts.org), and we're going to use your beautiful bird costume as inspiration for our costume makers :-)

Coolest Homemade Rainbow and Pot of Gold Group Costume 2

Homemade Rainbow and Pot of Gold Group Costume

Homemade Rainbow and Pot of Gold Group Costume

My daughter and her best friends wanted a Rainbow and Pot of Gold Group Costume. We searched for bright colors and found these neon tanks, leggings and tutus. We used old gym socks with batting hot glue to them for the clouds. The girls also had rainbow bow ties and funky rainbow colored hair pieces. They wore cute earrings and sunglasses that all matched their appropriate colors.

Our cute little pot of gold was a little sister who stepped into a pot that was decorated with sequence gold and black material. Her little gold shirt had chocolate gold coins hot glued to them. We also hot glued the coins to an old safari hat and glued gold sprinkles. She was too cute! We were going to make a rainbow balloon arch but it ended up being too big, so each girl held two colored balloons and the pot of gold had one of each color.

The girls loved their outfits and won their school costume contest.

Coolest Homemade Rainbow Costume

Homemade Rainbow Costume

Homemade Rainbow Costume

I made this Homemade Rainbow Costume completely from scratch. The dress is made of six different fabrics sewn together to show the six colors of the rainbow both from the front and the back of the dress. Clouds at the bottom and the top of the dress finish the rainbow.

I carried pot of gold that actually opened up and functioned as a purse. The earrings are also home-made, and are in the shape of raindrops. The umbrella has clouds and a sun painted on it. The rainbow bracelet I wore was also home-made. Glitter all over my hair and body might represent the mist that is needed to create a rainbow.

The only detail that isn’t homemade is the shoes, really. I was really happy with how it turned out. I wore it to a Halloween party and it was a hit. I had a lot of fun making it and wearing it.

Umbrella
by: Karen

Thank you! The umbrella was a plain blue umbrella that I bought. I painted it with the clouds and sun. I had planned to have "raindrops" hanging from it, but I ran out of time/motivation. Haha.

sooo cute!

What type of material did you use?

Thanks for all your comments! I didn't really use a pattern... I think I found a dress pattern that had 6 panels and cut each panel in half to make 12 panels. I used the cheap satin fabric that they always have on sale at JoAnn's around Halloween time.

Coolest Homemade Double Rainbow Costume 6

Homemade Double Rainbow Costume

Homemade Double Rainbow Costume

I was inspired to make this Double Rainbow Costume surrounding all the hype behind a YouTube video. The video featured a mountain man shooting a double rainbow with his video camera. The man is extremely enthusiastic about the rainbow he is witnessing and expresses his enthusiasm very dramatically. The video became an internet sensation and continues to be a hit. There has also been a song created around this video that is very catchy and clever. This song has become just a popular as the original video. I have found one other double rainbow costume on the internet but mine is much better.

Here's the original video:
