Homemade Rainbow Brite and Twink Costumes
These Homemade Rainbow Brite and Twink Costumes were inspired by my love of the 1980’s and my childhood favorite cartoon show! My birthday is two days before Halloween and I turned 30 this year, so I knew it had to be a good one! I set out to make a Rainbow Brite costume that was a little less… “cheap” looking than the one sold on the internet at present. I also wanted to have my 21 month old son be Twink (her little side kick) but no such costume exists… so make them I must.
The materials for both costumes totaled around $50 and they were sewn over the course of one week. I used a simplicity pattern for the base of Rainbow’s costume but I lengthened the skirt and had to design the sleeves.
I still want to tweak the fit to make it a little more form fitting for me, but overall I am happy with how it turned out. Twink’s costume was super-fun to come up with…and I modeled it after one of those round pumpkin costumes. The shape was perfect so I just added a hood and lined it with fleece so it would be warm enough for trick or treating. Our rainbow tights/socks were purchased at various stores…the only “store-bought” aspect of the design aside from under clothes.
I hope you like it!

I made this Homemade Rainbow Brite Halloween Costume out of an old bridesmaid dress that I found at a thrift store for $10. I cut off the bottom and used the excess to make the sleeves and wristbands. I used rainbow socks for the leggings and arm warmers and sequin suspenders that I found at Hot Topic.
I couldn't find a rainbow belt, so I bought some rainbow belt fabric from the craft store with some belt rings. I hand sewed all the sequins for the red star on the center and attached it. I also hand stitched the yellow stars on the wrist bands and used hooks to hold them on my wrists. I used some yellow fabric to make a choker, and stitched sequin circles on it.
The wig was the hardest part. I bought a long $5 one from Wal Mart and cut it off, then sewed the extra around the edge. Using hair spray, I folded the hair back into a ponytail, leaving some out around the front for the bangs, and it worked pretty well. The bottom white edge I made using some white satin that I sewed into a tube, stuffed, then hand stitched around the bottom of the dress.
Finally, I found the red shoes on clearance for $5. The whole costume cost around $35 and took about a week.

DIY Retro Rainbow Brite Girl's Halloween Costume Idea
My friends daughter decided on a DIY retro Rainbow Brite girl's Halloween costume idea. Of course we were excited to make this costume since we grew up with rainbow bright!!!!
I used a basic dress pattern and altered the sleeves to create a pointed cuff and added batting in between the rainbow arms and sewed along seams. On the hem line we added glitter felt casing and stuffed it loosely so it would flare out a bit. We made a little vest and attached the rainbow and star to it. I made her matching rainbow boot covers.
We altered a Cinderella wig by attaching a blue ribbon and star to the pony tail and pulling bangs down. Her momma added a small glittery blue star to her cheek.
For her bag we decided she needed the sprite. I used some curly white fabric and created a circular bag. I then used felt and embroidered his little face on. I made his legs from some rainbow striped fabric and stuffed them a bit. We used pipe cleaners and attached stars for his antennae, then stitched them to the handles to keep them up. It turned out cute.
The end result of this DIY retro Rainbow Brite girl's Halloween costume idea was great and it was a lot of fun to put together.
