My homemade Rainbow Brite Adult costume was pretty simple to make as I don't sew. The hardest part was finding the right blue dress. I searched a lot of second hand stores, Marshalls and TJ Maxx. I think I finally found it at a TJ Maxx on clearance.
I used an iron seam to get the white trim on the bottom. I asked a friend to sew the sequins on the arms. I used sticky-backed Velcro to make the belt with a felt star at the center, but the Velcro didn't hold well, so I may have to actually have it sewn on if I use the costume again.
The socks and gloves I found at a local thrift store in Boystown in Chicago (they have everything with rainbows). The boots were on sale at Payless.
The final touch was a yellow wig with rainbow colors on the back of it.
Overall, I think it worked well with the dress I found and, even though it wasn't exactly what Rainbow Brite wore, everyone knew who I was and I got LOTS of compliments and inspired at least one girl to be Rainbow Brite next year. I had a great time in the costume.
I made the entire Homemade Rainbow Brite Costume with the exception of the wig, shoes and tights! The arm warmers are actually a pair of tights with the feet cut off and slipped onto the arms. I bought most of my supplies at a fabric store. I LOVE how the skirt part is extra shiny!
For the rainbow on the chest, I actually found a vintage Rainbow Brite pillowcase that had a rainbow on it, I cut the rainbow out of the pillowcase and appliqued it onto the bodice. I had some fabric left from the pillowcase that was eventually made into a really cute Rainbow Brite purse! It's not pictured in this particular photo, but I made a rocking wand with a star on the end!
I actually made it for my sister who lives in New Orleans. She wore it last year for Halloween and I will wear it this year! I have actually made about 7 of these, and I am thinking about making some of the other characters from the 80's show for next Halloween! I actually made a mini Rainbow Brite costume for a friend's 12 month old! Too cute!

I loved Rainbow Brite growing up so when I was invited to a party and I had to be something that started with the first letter of my name I had to be her! The only sewing I ever learnt was in grade 8 at high school, so I wasted a couple of meters of fabric making this Rainbow Brite Costume.
I made all the rings on her arms separate so I could bend my arms, brought a fake fringe and tied my hair in a pony. I was going to spray my hair with colour hair spray, but they couldn't guarantee that it wasn't going to stain my hair(I have blond foils in my hair).
I brought a pair of gumboots and spray painted the red and added some more rings to them. I really wanted to do Rainbow Brite justice and make the costume as exact as I could. I had a little bit too much fun making this costume but I think it turned out better than I had expected. Hopefully this gives someone ideas to make there own costume.
