Homemade Queen of Hearts Halloween Costume

I wanted something big and dramatic for Halloween, original, but still pretty, so I decided to make a gigantic queen of hearts ballgown type thing. The Homemade Queen of Hearts Halloween Costume was super easy to make, surprisingly.

I used red velor for the skirt with a white silk front. I sewed red satin hearts on the front with gold embroidery threat for effect and little framing swirls below. The top part was made of black satin and a black shiny fabric with faint, fine, practically invisible gold lines that added a subtle texture.

I sewed a giant red heart on the chest which mirrors the shape of the corset, this was also surrounded in gold embroidery. The back of the top laced up in gold ribbon. I filled my huge skirt out with a 7 hoop skirt made out of 3mm steel craft wire, mesh, and muslin.

I got a huge number of complements and won two competitions with this costume! It was an absolute nightmare trying to waitress in it though.

It turned out wonderful! Did you follow a certain pattern for this project? I'm hoping to find something to go as the queen of hearts myself!

Thanks,
Tiffany

This Homemade Original Disney Queen of Hearts Costume is my version of the original Disney Queen of Hearts from the animated movie. The crown is a beer can that I painted gold and my hair is held up with a q-tip. The earrings were created out of wooden decorations and also painted gold. I made the paddle with extra thick craft foam, self-stick felt, and a wooden dowel.

The dress was entirely made from scratch combining 5 different patterns; one for the collar (which didn't turn out exactly right, but I am planning on re-enforcing it), one for the neckline, one for the bodice, once for the sleeves, and finally, one for the skirt. The hoop skirt was purchased and modified to create a more bell shape. The pantaloons were made from a purchased pantaloon pattern.

This took me about 2 months to create with the help of my mother and sister. This was by far the most difficult thing I have ever made.

I am attempting to create a Queen of Hearts costume for this halloween, but I'm not sure how much fabric to get. Do you remember how much red, black, yellow, and white it took? Could you email me at tktailshsu@yahoo.com and let me know if you remember? Thanks,
Taryn K

Queen of Hearts Homemade Costume

Every year with the help of my mom (who is a great seamstress) I have a unique and homemade costume. This year our office theme was Alice in Wonderland and I was the Queen of Hearts.

I found a pattern for a dress with a high collar, and with serious alterations in mind, we (or should I say she!), went to work. Four fittings $75 and several days worth of sewing later I had this great queen of hearts homemade costume.

For the breast plate we copied a queen of hearts playing card on to iron-on transfer paper. and the crown was made from an empty Quaker grits container cut into the shape of a crown, painted gold, with a few fake gems glued on for good measure. I carried a flamingo shaped pocketbook that I found on eBay (it came in handy for taking off Alice's head).

The Homemade Queen of Hearts Costume is all hand made with some altered Goodwill stuff. It took me a week to sew it all together and paint my staff and make my necklace out of mini cards and resin. I used 30 yards of tool total and made my crown out of gold fabric. The only things I bought already made were my stockings and my shoes.

I did my makeup with Gothic kit and mac makeup. Painted my heart on my lips with some red lipstick and Viola! off with their heads!

Can you please please send me an email with some instructions on how you made the "collar" and necklace? The costume we ordered on Etsy isn't coming and we are desperate to get something together for a Halloween skit on Tuesday/Wednesday

I love Alice in Wonderland movies so this Homemade Queen of Hearts Costume was my take on The Queen of Hearts. It took three months to make but it was fun. Hope you enjoy it.
