My twin boys look so different that I decided they would make a great Popeye and Bluto. I copied the original cartoon outfits almost identically, it was really easy. Popeye had a costume sailor hat I purchased and stitched at the back to downsize, I used knee high panty hose for the arms with batting for "muscles" and black puffy paint to make the anchor. The pants are just 3 dollar sweat pants I bought up a size and cut off the hems to make them more sailor style. The shirt is also a sweatshirt I cut the arms off and cuffed with red material. The kerchief was the hardest, I had to make the red peek out from the black so it is double sided. I used puff paint to make the white lines and sewed yellow buttons on the shirt.

Bluto has a one piece collared Henley and I used puff paint to do the trim and changed the buttons. The yellow pants were a 3 dollar dress from a thrift store I cut up and sewed into wide leg pants. I ordered an authentic navy Greek fisherman cap for his costume, the navy belt is a regular belt I cut to the right length. I used the costume adult mustache and put it upside down to make him a beard (while he was sleeping of course) Haha, and Voila! Classic Popeye and Bluto!

Homemade Popeye, Olive Oyl and Sweet Pea Family Costume

Homemade Popeye, Olive Oyl and Sweet Pea Family Costume

After our son was born this year, we wanted to do something as a family, an after looking at your site we found it was so interesting and a great help, we decided this Homemade Popeye, Olive Oyl and Sweet Pea Family Costume would be an easy and fun costumes to make. We first tried to buy the costumes from the store but we just weren't happy about the quality so we went on our own.

For Popeye I went to a used clothing store for the pants and shirt, I also picked up ribbon, fabric, Styrofoam, glue, buttons and felt from Michaels, the shoes where clown shoes and sprayed them with black paint. I carved the arms out of Styrofoam an covered them with latex skin and make up an drew an anchor on them.

I ordered the hat and corn pipe. The can of spinach was from a regular can I just printed the picture on it ( I love the cup idea but I knew we had the baby all night).

Jenny's outfit was ordered. She just used her own shoes and accessories and Brandon's costume was a chilly pepper costume and I just cut the top off an glued the felt around the top an put hair scrounges around his wrist!, He was a great sport he kept the hat on all night!

Coolest Homemade Popeye and Olive Oyl Couple Halloween Costume Idea 22

Homemade Popeye and Olive Oyl Couple Halloween Costume Idea

I tried both the adult Popeye costume and large kids costume; one way too big, the other way too small. So I went on the journey to make my own homemade Popeye costume. I used a few suggestions from this website such as getting the pipe from a smoke shop. I went in asking for Popeye’s pipe and they handed me one :)

For the pants I went to a place where they sell medical uniforms and found a pair of nurse scrubs that had loops for a belt. I got the sailor hat from a Halloween store. I made my sailor shirt, by converting one of my V-neck shirts. I went to Jo-Ann's arts and crafts to get some red material, yellow buttons, black ribbon and blue ribbon to make my sailor shirt. I also got the yellow belt from Jo-Ann's. Finally I took the left over red material and glued it around a pea can to make Popeye’s spinach.

Oh and then my favorite was Popeye’s arms. I bought yarn the size I wanted Popeye’s arms to be and just stuck my hand through the middle of the bundle. I then pulled nylon over it and tucked it in on each end. It was super secure and easy to make. Of course then drew on the tattoo. Such a fun costume!
