My husband and I are always looking for creative Halloween costume ideas. Last year we decided to be Green Army Men! The idea was easy but making the costumes took some time.

We started out with military style clothing dyed with RIT dye. This idea didn't get the look we were going for (we wanted that plastic look) Eventually we went with rain suits from a sporting goods store and spray painted them with green spray paint.

We got a lot of our accessories from military surplus store. Helmet, canteen, belts: we also painted these with the same green spray paint. We got our guns from a Halloween store and just painted them.

We bought our boots from a thrift store, spray painted them and screwed laminate floor tiles to them to create the base for our shoes. We tried using green latex body paint for our faces and arms but it was the right color so we went with a back up face paint. I wasn't that stoked on how the face color came out. I wish it was darker and had better coverage.

here are definitely things I would do different on this Homemade Green Army Men Halloween Costume Idea looking back. The green spray paint never dried all the way on our rain suits. Because they are a slick material (and we used a lot of paint) they were still tacky in places. I would probably use two layers of the floor tile under our shoes (they started to crack by the end of the night). And I would look for a better green face/bady paint.

That all said and done, it was a super fun costume. We got a lot of compliments and pictures! Happy Halloween

I started this homemade green army man Halloween costume idea by going to the army surplus store. I found a pair of used boots $5.00, belt $5.00 and a canteen $2.50. I found a pair of cargo pants and a BDU shirt $3.00 a piece. I didn’t want to spend a lot of money on a helmet so I made one from cardboard and paper mache. I then covered the helmet with canvas, tied a net and put that on top of the canvas.

I then had to figure out how to make my hands and face and clothes all the same color. I found some green liquid body latex online. When the latex arrived I painted a piece of paper with it, took it to Lowes and had them mix a gallon semi-gloss interior latex paint to match. I then spent a number of nights painting all of my clothes with three coats of the interior latex paint.

I found my first paint ball gun and painted it also. The base is just a piece of cardboard that I cut to shape and painted. When it was time to get dressed I spent about an hour and a half painting my face and hands. I used three coats to make sure it was good and green. The cool thing about the liquid body latex is that when you’re ready to take it off, it pulls off in one piece for the most part. Try to avoid getting it in your hair. I learned that lesson the hard way.

I made this Homemade Green Army Man Costume for my husband. He looked just like the little figures that come in a bucket and which also featured in the movie "Toy Story".

The first thing I did was buy a few tubes of non-smudge green face paint. I then matched the color exactly with a shade of green paint at Home Depot. I bought a gallon of this paint which was Behr Premium Plus in semi gloss.

I went to an army surplus store and bought a pair of khaki BDUs. I painted the outfit with the Behr paint. I also painted a store-bought helmet and a toy gun.

I then painted a pair of his old Timberland boots and gorilla-glued each one to a piece of linoleum tile, bought at Home Depot and modified to serve as a stand.

I used the face paint to cover his face and hands.
I made sure he closed his eyes and mouth, when pictures were being taken, so that he looked completely green!
