Homemade Lego Pirate Halloween Costume Idea

I got this homemade Lego Pirate Halloween costume idea online and just added details that my 6yr old insisted on. Such as the peg leg, hook hand and parrot on the shoulder. He wanted it to look just like the Lego pirate toy.

I started by cutting circles out of 2" foam insulation for the top and bottom of the head. Then I used three dowels to connect the top to the bottom of the head. I then covered it with tag board. I constructed the rest of the costume with cardboard and covered everything in tagboard to get a smooth surface. For the feet I zip tied the cardboard feet to a pair of cowboy boots which worked really well.

I used felt for the hat and hot glued a cardboard pirate scull, that I found in the Halloween decorations, to it. I used spray paint for the body and feet and regular latex paint for the head. I used latex paint for the detail work as well. Then I sprayed it with a gloss spray paint to give it a shine. Careful not to get it on the foam as it will distort it. I also made the hands out of foam, I used two circles and glued them together and cut a hole for a Pringles can to fit in for the arm. I shaped one hand like a hook and the other like a Lego hand. For my sons costume I reinforced them with duct tape and then painted them.

For the Parrot I used a cream container covered with tag board and painted to look like a parrot. I used a plastic mesh for the mouth so he could see out. I also used a little velcro to attach the head to the body.

This is my version of an awesome Lego pirate costume. The costume is constructed of only 3 types of cardboard (posterboard, thick cardboard, and thin cardboard), the only thing that is not recyclable is the mouth. It is cloth so I can see out of it. That makes this Lego Pirate Costume 99% recyclable.

I used 3 types of adhesives (grey tape, clear box tape, and hot glue). The Lego Pirate Costume measures about 8 feet 10 inches when I put it on. All the images on the costume are made drawn with pencil, then with marker, then hand brush painted with water based vinyl paint.

I worked on this Lego Pirate Costume over a span of about 4 days, but I have about 24 hours invested in making it. Every measurement is exact. No one side is bigger than the other. Now that I made this for the first time I see where I can make some more changes but all in all it came out pretty awesome. I am very mobile in the costume but can not put it on by myself. I have uploaded a video of me putting on the costume and walking around in it if you are interested in viewing it:

The Homemade Lego Pirate Costume was completely homemade for under $50. It includes the head, chest piece, a hand stitched glove, hook, sword, and leg pieces. In all, took about 2 weeks to make. I based the costume off of the Lego pirate minifigure I had at my house.

The head started with insulation foam, and was cut and glued in layers. Then had a small coat of body filler and then sanded and painted yellow. The face was done with 1/4" foam based of a stencil I drew. The hat was made from felt stretched and stitched over hangers that were form fitted. The pirate skull was cut out of foam and glued to the hat, and the hat was glued to the head.

The body and legs were cut and formed with duct table and cardboard and painted black. 1/4" foam was used to form the design on the body pieces.
A yellow glove was also stitched out of felt to create a Lego-like hand to hold the sword.

As a child, a lot like other kids, I was obsessed with Legos, so this year, since its my second year of teaching, I wanted to be something fun for my students to enjoy. I decided to make a Homemade Pirate Lego Halloween Costume, because those were the best Legos there were.

I used insulation board for the body and legs to make sure it was sturdy. I used a quick set tube and pipe insulation for the head, along with a lot of cardboard for the hands and the top of the head. I left the backs of the legs open so walking was easier for me. I actually was able to withstand the NYC parade and walking around afterward in my costume with no damage. Also, after Halloween, my friend googled "Pirate Lego Halloween NYC 2010" and someone posted a video of me in my costume.

My 7 year old son loves Lego Pirates so this year we made a Brickbeard Lego Minifig Pirate Costume. The body was made from a cardboard box that we painted and the head and hands are made up of cardboard tubes and Styrofoam that was sanded into shape and then painted.
