Homemade Girls Pirate Costume

My daughter announced at 7pm that she had to dress up as a pirate the next day!!! Of course I had nothing prepared and it was too late to buy anything, so thanks to sites like yours on the internet I was able to get some great ideas.

First off I found a denim skirt and shirt that my daughter had in her cupboard. Then I made another skirt to go over the top made up of scrap lining cut into triangles overlapping one another in 2 different colours and sewn together at the waist with some elastic. I left the edges raw to make it look more tattered. I then made a wide belt from black satin with 3 buttonholes on either side at the centre front and threaded some thin white ribbon through to make it looked like it was laced up.

To finish off the homemade girls pirate costume, my daughter already had boots and borrowed one of my large hoop earrings and I made her a head scarf out of more scrap red lining.

I was really happy with the finished look and she also won the prize for best dressed. Not bad considering I had hardly any notice :)

Brilliant look and design
by: Michelle -Ohio, USA

My daughter is in a play with a lot of pirates, so a store bought costume wouldn't work -- can't have everyone dressed alike. And she is really particular about the look. So I have looked at hundreds of pictures and ideas, and yours is the best. And my daughter agrees. Thank you for sharing.

We are using a black skirt, already tattered at the bottom from an old costume.

Using blue satin for head and skirt -- she is Blue Beard in the play -- and the rest like you did.

You are wonderfully creative!

Thank you!

For this Homemade Female Pirate Wench Costume, I was more than a little inspired by 'The Redhead' from the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland...however,as it was a last-minute costume (I had only two days to make it as I'd just been invited to a Pirate Party that weekend)I didn't happen to have any bright red velvet on hand, so had to change the color scheme a bit and make do with some pretty wine-colored fabric that I did have.

I made a simple skirt and top (any renaissance pattern will do.) Under this I wore a chemise (ditto), and over it made a quick corset/bodice top from a repurposed pair of leather pants I found at a thrift store (I will post more on this later--it's very simple and looks great!).

The hat, believe it or not, is just shaped from cardboard, with wine colored velvet glued over that, and silk flowers added.

I tied a thin black velvet ribbon around my neck for a choker, added some fishnet stockings and high black leather boots (found at the thrift shop) (oh, and fake eyelashes too!) to complete my look :)

The hat of the Homemade Drunken Pirate Costume was a gift. I regularly dress up like a pirate for almost all occasions, so a friend gave it to me knowing it would go to good use. The dreads are my actual hair. I usually have an eye patch, however you cannot see it in this picture.

The shirt was an old costume I had, cut up, sleeves added, more lace and whatnot, and spider-y. The corset underneath is one of my personal corsets, reversible, and perfect for the occasion! The Micro-mini skirt was bought with modified with this costume in mind, with a fluffy underskirt. The leggings were some older leggings I had, single leg, they tie at the waist and make a bow. I rescued them from the dark drawer of 'never-to-be-worn-again!' The boots were some old boots I do believe I recieved one Christmas, and the collar is my own creation. Oh, and a striped glove.
