Homemade Pippi Longstockings Costume

Homemade Pippi Longstockings Costume

To pull of this Homemade Pippi Longstockings Costume just requires a few simple things.

1) A plaid or stripped long sleeve.

My daughter used a flannel she already had.
Flannels are inexpensive and are common and sold in many places. They are warm and fit perfectly for cold weather.

2) A jean or denim article.

My daughter used a pair of old jeans she already had. You can use a skirt or a overall dress or jeans as well.

3) Boots or a high top shoe.

My daughter used some old brown boots she already had. You can use any color boots.

4) Red hair, in braids.

My daughter has artificially dyed red hair, you can use a wig, or even spray hair color that washes off in the shower. The can is inexpensive and less than $5.

Tip: If you can't get your hair to stick out then you can braid it and use colorful hair ties and make pony tails. The hair ties can be found anywhere, they are also inexpensive.

-Long socks, my daughter had some red fluffy ones that can't really be seen because of the jeans, but long socks can be purchased anywhere, even at the dollar store.

-A satchel or a bag. My daughter took her satchel since she felt it fit the "Pippi adventure girl" look. You can use which ever bag you own. As long as you got a place to store your trick or treat candy.

Coolest Pippi Longstockings Halloween Costume 21

My daughter decided she wanted to be Pippi Longstocking for Halloween this year. We started by checking out local thrift stores to find a blue jumper and boots. After striking out at three stores, I decided we needed a different strategy. Ultimately, we found both the jumper and the boots on eBay for a total of $13.00 including shipping.

We used old fabric squares to make patches which I sewed on the dress. We bought the knee socks at the .99 cents store for $2.00. She had the red turtleneck and the monkey which I pinned onto her dress. To do the all important braids, I purchased, for 75 cents, wire from Home Depot which was positioned at the base of her head and braided into her hair.

The final touch was red spray paint bought at a local party supply store. Grand total for the Pippi Longstockings Halloween Costume was a little over $20.00. Most importantly, in the end, she was very happy with the costume and got many compliments -- someone told her on Halloween night, “I’ve seen over 200 costumes, and yours is the best!”

Great Idea/Costume!
by: Karen

My daughter had to dress up for Favorite Book Character Day at her school. Since she has long hair and liked Pippi, I suggested we try dressing like her as a character without really thinking it through. I had no idea how to pull this together until I found your picture online. You prevented what could have been a disaster because I only had a day to make her character:) I followed your instructions as close as possible. No time for ebay so I hit the thrift store and was lucky enough. End result she was very happy thanks to your post. Thanks!
