I undertook making this Pennywise the Clown Costume with the aim of getting it nearest the original as possible. With no experience on a sewing machine I perhaps ambitiously purchased my clown costume pattern and sourced the best matching material I could find and cut the sections to size. In the end the sewing side took quite some time but with a pretty good result I think.
Getting the face correct was key for the costume and after trimming a full wig to size, applying the correct make-up and inserting my prosthetic teeth I attempted to insert some lenses in the style of the clown late in the film. Being a non-lens wearer this proved one step too far and instead my girlfriend wore the lenses adding something to her own costume.
The end result was an immediate crowd pleaser to the extent I had security guards in our local take-away approaching me for pictures with them.
I have since added to the clown ruff to insert the coloured layer from the original film and make the costume as near perfect as I could.

I couldn't decide whether I wanted to be Pennywise the clown, or just be a guy being carried in a bucket. So I decided to combine the two. All in all this Homemade Pennywise the Clown Costume is a pretty cheap costume to make.
Makeup was about $20, the garbage can was $25 and the mask on the fake body (the guy carrying the garbage can) was like $10. All the other components were clothes I had laying around or bought at a thrift store or fabric store. The skull cap I'm wearing was also $10 from the costume isle at a retail store and I just used good grease stage makeup to make it white.
After some sewing and riveting, it became a fairly easy costume to get in and out of. The legs under the fake body are my own and I enter the garbage can from a hole I cut in the bottom/back of the garbage can, the long shirt on the fake torso covers my entrance hole making it look as if there is a person carrying me around.
I always make my own Halloween costumes, it makes it more fun when you didn't buy it. I hope you enjoy it.

I was sick and tired of the cute or slutty Halloween costumes being sold in stores, so I decided to get creative and make my own Homemade Scary Clown Halloween Costume. I took my black graduation gown, bought a black afro (because I said black afro, some of my friends thought I was being a black man), and used some makeup to transform me from a fifteen-year-old girl into an original scary clown.
I used to call it a “goth clown”, (my family still calls it that) but then I found out the actual meaning of the word “goth” and I stopped calling it that.
People literally screamed when I turned the corner at school. I really wish I had entered my school's costume contest, because I would have won in the "Scariest Costume" division. I would have gone up against someone dressed as Freddy Kreuger and someone dressed as a knight holding a boombox playing eerie music.
