Homemade Peanut Butter and Jelly Family Costume

This homemade Peanut Butter and Jelly family costume first started when I purchased this store-bought Wonder Bread costume for my youngest son (in the center). I wanted his two older brothers to have something that “complimented” the theme.

The inside frames of the costumes are both pop-up hampers (the Jelly one was hemmed up for the little one). They were both then covered in polyester batting and appropriate colored fabrics. To recreate the jar labels, I used foam sheets and felt and free handed the words and designs onto the different colored foams by looking at the real peanut butter and jelly jars. Some of the small details were drawn on with Sharpie markers.

I then cut out all the letters and logos and hot glued everything to a large rectangular foam sheet. This often required several layers of foam in some areas of the label (which is difficult to see from the picture). The fabrics and labels were then glued and/or hand sewn in several areas to finish the costumes. Holes were cut out for their heads and arms.

It was a lot of fun to do and received rave reviews on Halloween while trick-or-treating. Many people walking and driving by stopped and asked to take a group picture of the boys on their cameras and cell phones.

Happy Halloween!

Theresa what a wonderful job, well done, you should get into that business of your own, seems like you really enjoyed making the costumes for your sons. I give you a big 10.

Day Job

Awesome Job. You are so creative but don't you dare leave your day job, what would we do without all that talent.

How much did this cost? Was this easy? How much time did it take up? Thanks!

These are the coolest peanut butter and jelly costumes I have seen - would you be interested in selling them?

Thanks. :)

Thanks for the offer but I've given them away already. They'll show up again on someone I'm sure. Wasn't too hard to do just takes a lot of patience with recreating the labels with the foam and felt sheets. Good luck. :)

Coolest Homemade Peanut Butter and Jam Halloween Couple Costume 3

Homemade Peanut Butter and Jam Halloween Couple Costume

Homemade Peanut Butter and Jam Halloween Couple Costume

Creating this Homemade Peanut Butter and Jam Halloween Couple Costume was a bit of a challenge. First finding the foam (which was a camping mattress) and then cutting it to shape using knives. To wear the bread we had to slice into the foam and tunnel in straps so it wouldn't be seen form the back or front.

Once the bread was sliced and shaped with the straps, we cut the material for the crust and spray glued the pieces on. and then added the sesame seeds.

After the crust dried it was time to figure out how the peanut butter and jam would be placed on. Using over 3 meters of 2" Velcro with more spray glue and Velcro glue. The Velcro was glued onto the foam and then the peanut butter and jam had the other side of foam glued on to them. With arm holes and Velcro the pieces were complete.

To wear the bread you first had to climb into the bread straps and then the jam and and peanut butter was placed over top of our bodies.

We wanted to go as a couple and wanted to be comfortable for the night. We saw a picture of a child dressed up as a sandwich and decided to make it a two person contest. This Homemade Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich Couple Costume is a perfect couples costume because it encourages a lot of hugging!

We bought purple and brown shirts and iron on letters and then for the bread we found a twin size mattress pad and cut it in half and then cut it into the shape of bread. We spray painted the edges dark brown for the crust and attached arm straps with pieces of ribbon. It was a hit at the parties we attended!!

Peanut Butter Jelly Sandwich Costume

My four year old daughter Emily wanted to go as a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, so I bought two pieces of three inch foam for my bread. I dabbed light brown paint on the edges to make the crust. I also trimmed it to be more bread shaped.

Then I took some purple material and added purple glitter to make it look wet. I glued the fabric on to the foam with some hanging out the sides. I did the same thing with some light brown fabric for the peanut butter.

I added straps to keep it up on her. She wore light brown pants and a purple and white baseball shirt. She was so cute.

I would also like to know where the 3 inch foam came from because I have looked EVERYWHERE for the foam with no luck....I ended up buying a mattress pad and used cardboard on one side...not quite the same but good enough! :)

She looks like such a yummy and tasty peanut butter and jelly sandwich that I want to put her on a plate and eat her up for lunch. I really want to be a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and I found some 3" foam at Home Depot so maybe I will turn myself into something yummy for lunch. I am going to taste so good everyone will want to eat me! :)
