Homemade Paul Bunyan and Babe The Blue Ox Couple Costumes

My boyfriend and I always try to come up with a couples themed costume. We love making our own costumes because they always end up better than anything you can buy in the store. Originality and creativity go a long way. After a year of brainstorming, I was finally inspired by a vintage souvenir plate of Paul Bunyan and his Blue Ox, Babe. As Minnesotans we wanted to honor a famous legend which originated close to home.

I decided to make the blue ox a literal "babe" so I chose to wear a dress, making her of the female persuasion. I made the ears and tail out of blue fleece material and my hooves and horns were yellow felt. I painted a plastic cow nose blue and added the gold nose ring. For additional authenticity I hung a real bell around my neck. Since he couldn't actually be a giant lumberjack my boyfriend decided it would be funny if at least his ax could be. He made the oversized ax himself from a cardboard tube and cut and pasted cardboard pieces together, painting it red and silver, just like Paul's.

Coolest Paul Bunyan Homemade Halloween Costume Idea 3

Paul Bunyan Homemade Halloween Costume Idea

As a child, my favorite Walt Disney Short was Paul Bunyan. My one year old, Cash is a lot like Paul Bunyan, just in a little baby body! He is super playful, strong, and independent. I debated how I was going to do Babe The Blue Ox. I searched for a stuffed or toy ox. I thought I would spray paint it blue. However, I could not find one. I decided to paint Babe on foam board and have my husband or myself just hold it for Cash.

Cash's costume was pretty easy to put together - flannel shirt and jeans. I just needed to find a beanie and suspenders that were infant size. I also had to find an ax for him to hold. Luckily, those are easy to find during Halloween! Lastly, he needed a beard. I painted that on with some brown makeup. Cash didn't really want to hold the ax and he hated the hat, (well, he hates all hats) but he loved all the attention!

Homemade Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox Couple Costume. Everything home made, easy and creative with just a few trips to Hobby Lobby. The best way to go about Babe is to find things for a cow costume and to paint them blue with acrylic paint.

Paul's clothes were all found at an Antique store and were relatively inexpensive. The giant axe is made of cardboard and foam-board, glued together and spray painted with metallic and brown for effect. The best thing about this costume is that it is easily recognizable; you don't have people coming up to you the whole night asking what you are dressed up as.

Also a key essential for Paul is the dark beard/scruff. Even for lighter haired men a little black marker will be efficient and will also come off easily in the morning believe it or not. It does help if you can grow your own facial hair out for a week or so before hand.
