Homemade Great Horned Owl Costume

Homemade Great Horned Owl Costume

We love Halloween and don't believe in buying costumes, so this year we put our imaginations to work. I have a two year old, so going super scary was out of the question. This Great Horned Owl costume was handmade in one, very long night.

The mask was made with recycled cereal boxes, paper mache, hot glue, paint and some material matching the wings to give it a 3D effect. We shaped the mask to my face so it fitted perfectly, putting the paper mache directly on my face. It was like getting a facial and easy to remove. I used a blow dryer to speed up the process.

We took pieces of cereal boxes and cut the shapes of the ears and brow, making sure to layer them. Then we painted it with non-toxic paint and markers, then cut the feather shapes and glued them on around the cheeks. I cut and tied some old hair ties together, gluing them under the feathers on each side to hold it on my head.

For the body, we just took an old sheet my husband used last year and cut it into a circle, with a hole for the head. Then came the cutting and gluing. I had an old pair of dress pants from when I was pregnant, and my step dad had a few free khaki gift shirts they give when you buy from Southern States, and some old camo cargos he couldn't fit into.

I made a stencil and started cutting. Then we glued them on making sure to stagger the colors and layer. I wore a long-sleeved shirt of similar color underneath beige corduroy pants and grey gloves. It was a very cool costume!

Owl Costume

This owl costume I made for my son to dress up in this fall. In this moment in time he really wants to know about animals and seasons of the years. He just started kindergarten and is 5.

My son has show- n- tell on Mondays and wanted to bring a owl but we don't have an owl so I took a sweatshirt sewed some felt feathers (I just drew a shape of a feather on a cereal box and used it for a template)onto the front of the sweater and large squares in the armpit of the sweater to make wings then rounded it to a feather tip.

I used a cereal box more felt and some ribbon to make the mask just drew on the card board then put the felt on the front and back of the mask. For the eyes I made big circles and stuffed them with more felt scraps and cut holes so my son could see tied on ribbon and, tah dah, there is the owl.

My son is 9 years old and has been given a school assignment that requires he act and dress up like the main character in a book. The book he is reading is "The Capture" - about owls, apparently!

We checked the local party supply/costume store, but no luck. Then I tried the internet. After printing out your (Anderson's) costume, we headed to Wal Mart on the way home from hockey this afternoon and purchased felt, sheets of colored foam, some real feathers and a very inexpensive long-sleeved brown shirt!

Our costume is almost finished! I am very grateful to you for taking the time to make your creation available for me to use. I am not that crafty or creative!!!

Thanks a million!!

Homemade Owl in a Tree Costume

Homemade Owl in a Tree Costume

I dressed up in a Owl in a Tree Costume for Halloween one year. I made a mask out of paper plates, feathers, etc.

To make my face into the owl, and I glued bark and leaves onto a cardboard box to make the tree. I got lots of comments when I wore this to farmers' market on Halloween!

This owl is taken from a cartoon - a really old and smart owl. I made the costume from old cloths, paperboard and I used some paint. It's really easy and not expensive to make.
