I made this homemade Transformer costume for my best mates 21st birthday that is considerably close to Christmas. He didn't want anyone but him to dress as Santa, so everyone else had to be creative.

I had just watched Transformers which inspired me to make this. I took a cardboard box and crouched in it drawing where my arms and head would be. My mates did help me mark where parts needed to be.

Once I knew where my arms and head would sit I then molded pieces around those limbs while considering the movement I'd need and the space I have.

The arm pieces were excessively reinforced with paper-mache to make them stronger. Once I was happy with this I wrapped all of the shell of the costume in Christmas wrapping paper. On the helmet I used a shiny metallic looking wrapping paper to give the metal effect of the helmet. I made smaller bits to go around the top parts of my legs.

All together I spent 2 days tops working on it. I have to say it did not survive the whole night. But it had function as you may see from the photos - that was the main goal.

A tip for making anything stronger in this case without doubt is either more glue or many layers of paper-mache as it does wonders for strength.

Having read on the news about the threatened air bases in Scotland I decided on a homemade transforming Sea King helicopter Halloween costume idea for my sons Halloween School Disco.

I started by going to the recycling center to get cardboard and other items to make this. I then sketched a draft of what I thought it might look like. I then started to make the costume by bending the cardboard into shape to make the front and using a glue gun I started to join all the bits together until it resembled the body. I then got an old back pack and glued it to the body of the helicopter, measured the size of cardboard I needed for the sides and also started to make the propeller. I used old socks to allow the sides to go on my child's arms. I also added a motor and battery pack that allows the propellers to rotate.

I painted the inside of the sides blue and on the outside of helicopter I started to put side pods on by using kitchen towel tubes and plastic bottles, I then painted the body and sides yellow. After the paint had dried I added detail using black paint and permanent markers, I also added 15 LED flashing lights to give it the wow factor.

Coolest Transformer Costume 28

Coolest Transformer Costume

My sister and I made this coolest Transformer costume in one day!! And the majority of this costume was made out of recycled cardboard.

We started with a red long sleeved t-shirt, grey leggings and silver shoes. Then we made the two calf boxes and the two arm boxes using beer boxes and red duck tape. We spray painted a tub blue and stenciled on the Transformer logo in red on front then used the tub part of the box and strapped it on to the front of the costume to make the chest piece and used the lid to make the back piece.

On the top of the tub in front we attached a head lamp to give the look of car headlights. We used the red duct tape to wrap some toilet paper rolls and glued them on the front of the tub. We wrapped two paper towel rolls and placed them on the shoulder pieces so they would stick up. We purchased a Transformer mask and some toy guns (which we spray painted silver and attached to the arm piece) to complete the Transformer costume.

I'm an artist living in Austin, TX who spends every September and October making my kids Halloween costumes. My son wanted to be a Transformer again. As an experiment, I wanted to see if I could motorize his wheels this time and make the costume functional as a car. His body serves as the frame. Each wheel has its own motor and gearbox which we salvaged from some junked Power Wheels ride on cars. A toggle switch on each hand controls the wheels. Roller blade wheels allow his knees to roll when in position. More roller blade wheels on the shoes help stabilize the wheel but its still a challenge to keep the wheels in contact with the ground at all times. Plus with two 6-volt batteries, also from Power Wheels ride on cars, the whole suit weighs about 30 pounds which is a lot for an 8-year old!

This Homemade Formula One Transfomer Costume is not a practical costume for trick or treating, more of a show piece. Thanks!
