Homemade Optimus Prime Halloween Costume
Being a big man it is hard to find unique costumes for my husband. My son really loved Transformers and wanted Daddy to be Optimus Prime. So I put this Homemade Optimus Prime Halloween Costume together for him. It turned out so good that people stopped us in the middle of the street so they could get pictures of Optimus with their children.
Most of the items I used my husband found at work. It was a lot of different sized boxed, and Styrofoam used for packing computers. It was rather difficult to paint the cardboard (even with cardboard paint) so I covered everything first in fabric ( red and blue) then painted over it with metallic cardboard paint.
For the helmet I used a kids play batters helmet, covered that with foam to form the helmet, cover it with fabric and painted it as well. The gas tanks were simply 2 soda bottles covered in tin foil and the tail pipes were paper towel holders cover in foil.
To make the pieces fit together and make it easy to get on and move I made openings but used Velcro to make it look like it was all one piece.
I probably spent 40 dollars on fabric, paint, glue and Velcro. It took about 2 weeks to make. I worked on a little each night.

I barely spent any money on this Homeamde Optimus Prime Halloween Costume because I had most of the materials at home. Most of the costume is made from boxes I got from work. The boots are made of soda boxes and the arm portion is tissue boxes.
The grill on the main chest portion of the box is used for cooking (which I already owned) and is spray painted silver. The helmet is a reused helmet from a previous football player costume I had made before, I just added to it using foil and spray paint. I did purchase the silver shorts and all of the spray paint, which wasn’t much money.
The shirt is my brother’s old red long sleeve shirt and the gloves are garden gloves spray painted blue. I printed the autobots symbol off of the computer and glued it onto the box. I made this costume last year for my character day during homecoming week at school and I then wore it around on Halloween. Many people stopped me to take pictures with them and the little kids loved my costume.
Overall, a very successful costume that only took me two days to make.
I made this Homemade Transformers Optimus Prime Costume with nothing but beer boxes, beer cans, and hot glue. I looked at a picture of Optimus Prime to make the helmet and get the wings on the helmet to the correct angle. I won best costume at a Halloween party for the first time in my life! I spent two full days cutting, resizing and fitting all of the pieces. The hardest part was definitely the helmet, with all of the curves and trying to get the contours of the helmet correct.
All and all I think it turned out pretty good for only working on it for two days. Hope you enjoy!
